I thought the diary was abandoned at a halfway house or something like that. Maybe I’m confusing the laptop and the diary but I thought they were both abandoned and that was something that made the Project Veritas raid suspicious.
Whatever the truth actually was, now that there’s a conviction that claims the diary is stolen property, anyone who talks about the diary’s contents is now peddling in stolen goods, so nobody can talk about any of it upon pain of whatever force the government can throw at you. Awfully convenient that.

By the same token, I suspect, a diary left in a hotel room, still belongs to the owner. And the proper course would have been to turn it into the hotel, and let the hotel contact the owner.

Reading the entire article, it seems that the diary was left behind in a place that Ashley had rented and was found by the next renter. If my understanding is correct, how is that stealing?
OTOH the convicted people pleaded guilty to “conspiring to steal”. Does that include stealing or just planning to steal? Also, a guilty plea can be to something a person did not actually do to avoid a much worse outcome if the case goes to trial.
