Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has warned airlines that his department could draft new rules around passenger rights if the carriers don’t give more help to travelers trapped by flight cancellations and delays.
Buttigieg is asking airline CEOs to, at a minimum, provide lodging for passengers stranded overnight at an airport and give out meal vouchers for delays of three hours or longer when the disruption is caused by something in the airline’s control.
The Transportation Department on Friday released a copy of the letters, which it said were sent to CEOs of the major U.S. airlines, their regional affiliates, and budget carriers.
A spokeswoman for Airlines for America, a trade group whose members include American, United, Delta and Southwest, said airlines “strive to provide the highest level of customer service.” She said the airlines are committed to overcoming challenges including a tight labor market.
Buttigieg's agency recently proposed rules around refunds for passengers whose flights are canceled or rescheduled. He told the CEOs the department is considering additional rules “that would further expand the rights of airline passengers who experience disruptions.”
Buttigieg has been sparring with the airlines since late spring over high numbers of canceled and delayed flights.
In his latest salvo, he told airline CEOs he appreciates that airlines have stepped up hiring and trimmed schedules to better match the number of flights they can handle.
“Still, the level of disruption Americans have experienced this summer is unacceptable,” he wrote.

meal vouchers after 3 hours....ridiculous
Out of control government is out of control.
Oh My.
That’s actually fascism, but I doubt the college kids get that.
Someone should tell this moron that the Biden administration caused this logistical mess.
I have a better idea. Free travel to anyone that still wants to fly by air. And, hotel thrown in as a perk.
Perhaps the Federal government should take them over and run them. They do an awesome job with mail, welfare, border security and collecting taxes..... let em socialize air transportation. Give Pete something to do.
Has he got Monkeypox?
I did some flying earlier in the summer. While my flights were thankfully not canceled, I did see the extremely long lines of people waiting to have their flights rebooked. Further, I did call one airline to rebook a flight, but was told the wait time was over an hour. I left my number for a callback, which (as far as I can tell) never happened. As a result, I decided not to rebook — even though in the past it would not have been such a big deal.
The bottom line is the the airlines have no business booking flights they can’t execute. If its because of labor shortages, they should either pay (and charge) more to get the necessary labor. They should no schedule phantom flights that end up being canceled.
They will just blame “weather “ and skate.
If Buttigieg is so concerned about going green why doesn’t he have the the air lines shut down they are the biggest carbon producers.
Oh wait the feds need them no replacement system.
so much for their green plan huh Moe.
How about start from the FRONT end and stop over-booking?
Same goes for doctors. Enough of this 15-min appt but we’ll put in 3 at the same time!
Is that a picture of his colon on the wall behind him?
Well, don’t shut them down because of an overblown cold virus when they have the purest air in the plane. Don’t force fake “vaccines” on pilots and fire them when they refuse.
Why are you still forcing people to take their shoes off because of knee jerk response to some pretend terrorist over 20 years ago?
Look in the mirror you facist tool!
Now they want the airlines to pay for this abomination-
ha ha ha ha
Ooooooo! Isn’t he so tough and forceful? /s
Remove the stupid mandates, Buttplug. Get a clue.
