London (AFP) – Warmer and wetter weather linked to climate change appears to stress out bumblebees and make their wings more asymmetrical, which could ultimately affect their future development, according to UK scientists in a new research paper.
"With hotter and wetter conditions predicted to place bumblebees under higher stress, the fact these conditions will become more frequent under climate change means bumblebees may be in for a rough time over the 21st century," scientists at Imperial College, London, wrote in the Animal Ecology journal on Wednesday.
The Imperial College scientists looked at more than 6,000 bumblebee specimens in natural history museums, collected across Britain during the 20th century.
The scientists examined the right-left symmetry between the bees' four wings, because asymmetry is an indication that the insect experienced stress during development.
They found that bees from the second half of the 20th century consistently had a higher average rate of asymmetry.
Asymmetry was also "consistently higher in warmer and wetter years," according to the paper's senior co-author Richard Gill.
"Overall, these results could suggest bumblebees experienced increasing stress as the century progressed and that aspects of climate change could have contributed to this trend," the paper said.
The weather conditions linked to wonky wings "will likely increase in frequency with climate change", it continued.

I live in SW Pennsylvania. There are bees everywhere. Around my flower pots and baskets on the front and back porch, and all over the lawn. Also there are lots of hummingbirds too.
The evolutionary process is called adaptation
“Warmer and wetter”
I thought “climate change” caused droughts. Are they wet droughts?
Correlation doesn't imply causality. It could also reflect suburban sprawl and housing construction. Or increased radio waves. Or the rise of communism. Or a zillion other things that have zip to do with the weather.
Just because two things occurred in tandem doesn't mean one is causing the other.
Well, SOMETHING is wonky. Mostly inside the heads of those who attribute just about every anomaly that pops up to some mysterious and magical “climate change”.
Now, there is probably very real climate change going on. But nobody can seem to agree with any specifics of just which direction the change is proceeding along. And there is ZERO, ZILCH NADA, NO, even anecdotal material collected that in any way, shape, form, manner, or facet, that can suggest a logical conclusion that mankind may in any way affect the overall climate of the planet.
In very localized areas, where there has been extensive concentrated development, as an urban center or highly energy-intensive industrial operations, the local climatic conditions may be affected, but perhaps less than ten miles from such an energy hot spot, the climate is largely unaffected.
The explosion of the Huonga Tonga Volcano Jan. 15., 2022 shook the World but many scientists are saying nothing about it, even though, it pumped 58 billion tons of vapor and ash into the atmosphere over a 4 day period. The ash went to 85000 feet into the atmosphere. Why are scientists so quiet? It is considered one of the strongest explosions in recorded history.
I have seen less Butterflies, Honeybees and Bumblebees this year, than ever before.
Sure, just like global warming causes colder winters.
I’m seeing almost NO insects. Hasn’t rained in almost 6 weeks here. Crops are failing.
Usually my outdoor night light is swarming with critters. Last night I saw one solitary moth.
Not good for the food chain.
bees behavior has changed dramatically since I was a kid.
When I was a kid the only time you ever saw bees was near a large source of water (like a lake) or near or on flowers.
But now.. they have become like the rats of the skies! swarming trash cans, looking for spills, and any discarded soda cans left nearby to feed from. It’s no wonder if their looks have started to degrade from becoming scavengers. I don’t think it has anything to do with made up global warming.
...the fact these conditions will become more frequent under climate change means bumblebees may be in for a rough time over the 21st century

“May”. the magic weasel word of “scientific propaganda”.
Weather has always affected these critters....because food sources are involved.
yes.... climate change did that.
Good science-ing there, ‘Scientists’
OK how did I miss that?
Get a beehive and get your own honey!
I am dying to do that.
Also make a wildflower garden
Government funding makes scientists work wonky and corrupt.
