That’s my understanding of the Civil War.
The South left, over what the North was wanting to pay for cotton, because they could get better prices in Europe as a sovereign territory.

Lincoln went to war after provoking the secessionists, because he wanted to preserve the Union, because that land provided great cotton. If the South was able to leave permanently, the North would have had to pay the world price for cotton instead of the price they could force the South to sell for.

It wasn’t about the people, black or white, that’s for sure. You don’t kill 20% of the population and say you did it for the people.

It was the land at stake and not much more than that.
