Congressman Perry Gets Phone Back From FBI, Unclear About Motives Behind Seizure
epoch times ^ | 13 August A.D. 2022 | Naveen Athrappully

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry (R-Pa.) confirmed that he has received his cell phone back from the FBI after the agency had seized it a few days back.

On Aug. 9, a day after raiding former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, FBI agents had taken Perry’s phone as part of a separate investigation. At the time, Perry was traveling with his family. Speaking to “Capitol Report” on NTD News, the GOP member confirmed that he has received his phone.

He is still uninformed as to why the phone was confiscated by the FBI. However, Perry was informed by his attorneys that he was not a target of the FBI’s investigation.

After the seizure, Perry had blasted FBI agents for making no attempt to contact his lawyer who would have made arrangements to submit the phone if needed by the agency.

In a statement, Perry said that though he was outraged, he was “not surprised” that the FBI under the direction of Attorney General Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice would seize the phone of a sitting member of Congress.

Perry claimed that his phone contains information about political and legislative activities as well as private conversations with his family members, friends, and constituents, none of which is the “government’s business.”

“DOJ chose this unnecessary and aggressive action instead of simply contacting my attorneys,” the statement said. “These kinds of banana republic tactics should concern every citizen.”

Unprecedented Move

In an interview with NTD, Greg Shaffer, a retired FBI agent for the elite hostage rescue team, said that the FBI needs to have special permission to seize any property belonging to members of Congress, members of the clergy, attorneys, or other individuals who deal with privileged information. Seizing Perry’s phone was a “show of force” by the Biden administration.

“For an FBI agent to go walk up to a sitting congressman and take his cell phone … that had to be approved at the highest level at the FBI and DOJ,” Shaffer said. “That is very, very difficult to do. Unprecedented.”

It is unclear whether there is a link between Perry’s phone seizure and the raid on Trump’s home. Speaking to The Epoch Times, Perry pointed out that the separation of powers is a firewall that keeps the three branches of government in check.

By taking control of a phone belonging to a sitting member of Congress, the DOJ, “for maybe the first time in history, is preparing to pierce that veil.”

I’d ditch that phone and get a new one. No telling what they planted on it - child porn? tracking software? something to remotely activate the microphone? automatically forward emails and texts to a remote server?

if they want to spy on me, at least they’ll have to go to Google.

If he has a backbone, he will make it his mission in life to push through the disbanding of the FBI. It is now a disreputable political police enforcing legitimate political opposition.

Get to work man.

The FIB needs to be completely defunded, shut down, building razed, and the earth salted.

Period.

agree with him. I assume he supports President Trump.

Definitely a Trump supporter. He’s my congressman. He has been under investigation by the 1/6 commission for merely communicating with Trump regularly. He’s the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus. He’s a retired US Army General of the non-woke variety. He regularly ranks #1 by the American Conservative Union.

Just as aside, I sent him an email the night of the FBI raid of Trump’s home. I called for the shuttering of the FBI. I have no idea if my email was on his phone or if the FBI could gain access to the email server from having his phone. That is completely chilling. It reinforces my wanting the FBI shuttered. Everyone working at the FBI are absolute scum and antithetical to freedom. Those so-called good agents have been complicit in their silence and inaction for decades. There is no reform that will restore my faith in the FBI. They lack all credibility. They cannot be believed. Hence, they must be shuttered and any legal and just function they serve needs to be moved to state and local law enforcement. No one at the FBI should ever be allowed to work in government ever again - at any level. This needs to be done to avoid a civil war. (Not that I am capable of fighting that, I am old and crippled.)

I assume he has purchased another one by now and changed his telephone number. He would be foolish to do otherwise. He should also have it checked to see what was added or otherwise manipulated in his phone’s memory.

Seizing the phone serves three purposes:

1. Intimidation. The FBI is showing that members of Congress, correction; Republican members of Congress are not secure in their papers and possessions.
2. Allows planting of tracking software.
3. Allows the FBI to gather private intel from the enemy (ie. Republicans, specifically Trump supporting Republicans).

Okay....It appears that despite what the warrant says...if they find something that might apply to another case (let's say Jan 6th)...they can use it in that case.

I think that is what is going on.

In the end, probable cause is an escape phrase....

Thanks for the reply. I looks like Biden’s FBI has the same outlook as did Stalin’s secret police chief.

We are all going to need multiple phones like the citizens of China. One you hand over and one, or two, that you don’t.

Perry did an idiotic thing.

The correct answer would have been “No, I’m not giving you my phone. Call my attorney. Now get the F out of my way.”

He should have let them take it by force. Would be a great story on the news. Don’t fight, but resist. He should have kept it in his pocket, said the above, and let them wrestle him to the ground and forcefully remove it — arresting him if necessary. Deal with it later in court. He’s a Congressman for gawd’s sake.

Sometimes being a martyr has benefits to the whole...

I think the congressman said that the three not so special agents had a warrant.
It supposedly had something to do with the alternate Pennsylvania electors.
