Florida Keys deputies Wednesday morning shot and killed an off-duty federal law enforcement officer who they said pointed a semi-automatic rifle at them.
The deputies shot Lane Morgan Caviness, 48, at a house near mile marker 95 in Key Largo around 10:42 a.m. Eastern time. Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt said deputies were at the house after receiving reports of an armed, intoxicated, suicidal man.
Caviness was a commercial airline pilot who was also a sworn law enforcement officer with the Federal Flight Deck Officer program, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Air Marshal Service, Keys Sheriff Rick Ramsay confirmed.
Homeland Security officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Caviness’ death.

Thank goodness that he chose suicide by cop instead of choosing to crash his airplane in the middle of nowhere and taking all of his passengers with him.
Must have been a Trump supporter.
Sounds like a sad case.
He was suicidal, so they killed him?
Saying he was law enforcement is a bit of a stretch.
The flight deck officer program just means they have a gun in the cockpit in case it’s breached.
They take a class, qualify and they get to have a gun like El Al pilots.
That was my first thought also.
How many commercial airline pilots have mental issues and suicidal thoughts?
I know a lot of them drink like fish if you ever see them at those sky bars.
Years ago, my son was returning on a flight from overseas and his seat-mate was a nice gentleman who he enjoyed chatting with for the entire flight. When they landed and went to leave the plan, the gentleman handed my son a label pin and told him he had enjoyed their conversation. It was an “Air Marshall” pin. He had been chatting with an air marshal the entire time.

Strictly Controlling possession of guns by Federal Employees.
Suicide by police
Need a few FBI guys to try this…
I guess they succeeded in preventing him from committing suicide.
A few years ago I was ask to move two seats over from the aisle because another passenger was going to be seated in my ticketed seat. Not a big deal unless you have a physical disability that prevents you from walking. They brought folks on to reseat me. A everyday looking guy sat in my seat and that was that...
Any organization with hundreds or thousands of employees will have some of those employees who are at various stages of social, mental or drug abuse issues. You simply can’t control how all of those people will act in any given situation. Therefore, there will be rogue FBI agents, over the top crazy IRS agents and traitorous CIA agents. It can’t be stopped. Usually, the person experiencing whatever issue manages to act normally until he doesn’t. At which time everyone is shocked and in disbelief. Situation normal.
Makes sense.

As a relative who, won’t fly woild say “all of them! Anyone who, voluntarily leaves the safety of the ground to fly in the air should have their heads examined” lol
Yes. Suicide by cop.
Common occurrence.
That’s not an Air Marshal, that is a commercial pilot.
Boy,they better have the whole thing on bodycam/dashcam...otherwise someone’s gonna go to Federal prison.
One of my favorite flight memories: I was in my ticketed seat waiting for everyone to board when a very loud entitled woman made a scene claiming I was in her seat. A very nice flight attendant said “no problem” and asked me to come with her. She put me in a great seat in first class.
