The amount of gas and oil is seriously underestimated since your hero’s invasion of Crimea in 2014 ran off the US oil companies before they could find what they had contracted for in 2012—to explore for those very resources. In fact those contracts, not NATO fears, was probably the trigger for the Crimea theft. The gas is probably the big prize, and more favored by climate worriers as a transition fuel in a move to lower CO2 emmisions. Argue away friends of Russia, Pooty Pals, and trolls we see you and your occasional other supporters. True US patriots will never favor the kind of rapacious, theft, murder, and dishonor that Russia’s tyrant has now reverted to.

Further, the large gas reserves found in Ukraine over the last decade, both in and outside of previously Russian controlled areas, are poison to Putin. Developed rapidly with Western tech and money, with almost all of the necessary pipelines already in place (key factor), they represent price-lowering competition that Pooty and his pals might not survive.
