Aug 8 (Reuters) - Degrowth - the idea that a finite planet cannot sustain ever-increasing consumption - is about the closest you can get to a heresy in economics, where growth is widely held as the best route to prosperity.
But, as climate change accelerates and supply chain disruptions offer rich-world consumers an unaccustomed taste of scarcity, the theory is becoming less taboo and some have started to ponder what a degrowth world might look like.
After the U.N. climate science agency this year called for cuts in consumer demand - a core degrowth premise - the think tank that runs the Davos forum published a degrowth primer in June and the issue has even begun to crop up in investment notes.
"It is a provocative term," Aniket Shah, Global Head of ESG and Sustainability Strategy at Jefferies said of the New York-based bank's June 13 note on the "Degrowth Opportunity".
"But it's not about going to a low-income country saying 'You can't grow anymore'," he said. "It's saying: We need to look at the entire system and see how do we over time decrease total consumption and production in aggregate."

Capitalism says — we can create wealth, and build a bigger pie with more for everyone.
Old-style communists say — the amount of wealth is fixed, the pie does not grow, any wealth given to one person is necessarily stolen from another person, so redistribution of wealth is always needed so that ordinary people can have enough.
New-style communists say — the pie is shrinking, so now we need to take stuff away from ordinary people.
This would take us beyond an economic depression. This is serfdom.
You’ll have nothing and be happy.
And that is what Kaiser Klaus and all of his silly minions (The “Committee of Tree Hundrett”) want.
It is a better arrangement. More just.
Degrowth? Let us test the term, defined elsewhere as the "means primarily [ of ' the abolition of economic growth as a social objective."
Would degrowth as regards government be acceptable to the ideologues and media mouths spouting this? Would NASDAQ and the two Reuters writers find degrowth in their business and jobs acceptable? Would the "liberal new world" order enjoy its "degrowth?"
The article -- an opinion piece -- could be reworded with possible synonyms to clarify. Shrinkage? Loss? It would read a little differently, demonstrating how import nudging and messgaing are to the voices we are supposed to believe.
The article reads like the same old collectivism. "We need to look at the entire system and see how do we over time decrease total consumption and production in aggregate."
Let us consider degrowth for the legacy media, for governments at all levels, and at the many cossetted "public servants" for whom personal degrwoth would be deemed an attack on their fiefdoms and rents.
Degrowth is most assuredly reworded collectivism in which the little guys are "degrowth-ed" by the big guys.

Let's look for "degrowth" in government.
Our economic problems are not a global climate fact of life. It is a nightmare brought on by a drug induced delirium of our woke elites.
This will also be used to excuse the problems caused by inserting incompetent people into organizations of all types [thanks to a DIE quota system]. You’ll start seeing supermarket shortages, shoddy construction & products and power companies unable to deliver power.
No one will be held accountable for these problems because Climate Change and Scarcity. And if you persist in looking for a culprit, well....that is just racist.
I should also say that when company profits suffer from these issues, they will be sustained by ESG loans. We already see that happening as previously successful companies actively try to alienate their customer base by going full SJW.
What are their FR nicks?
The WEF have plans for us, and they aren’t good ones.
TO THE ELITES, YOU AND I ARE LIVESTOCK.
Nothing more.
On the other hand, how many cabbage patch dolls, beanie babies and whatever other useless plastic junk that becomes the latest fad does the world need?
These elite Libs fantasize about a world from the past that never existed. Without growth, you have famine, war, massive increases in crime, disease. Growth is the engine that took the world out of that. There would be death on scale never seen in human history if governments start following a policy of "degrowth."
I’ve said it for decades. What these people have been after at least since the 1960s is for the middle class to lower its standard of living and hand over all power to the government.
That’s always the “solution” to every “problem” be it:
- the depletion of resources/coming mass starvation
- peak oil
- coming ice age
- ozone hole
- global warming
- climate change
There’s always a new “urgent” “crisis” but there’s also always the same old “solution”.
How about we start the de-growth with those in Davos? Let them radically cut their standard of living. Do that and get back to me.
I have noticed a change in restaurant menus from a choice among various "meats" to a choice of various "proteins". At first I attributed that to tofu for the veggetarians ... now I think it's "nudging" people toward acceptance of eating worms, bugs, and other crap instead of meat.
A government which asks that question is exceeding its authority. A government which dares to ANSWER that question is a tyranny.
Sic Semper Tyrannis!!!

you are right, more political correctness. I haven’t noticed this but will be aware.
have fun with this. Be Columbo, say you don’t understand the menue and make them say “meat”.
Sic Semper Tyrannis!!!
Agreed. I wasn't thinking of government, just common sense.
