Reiko Yamada was 11 years old on August 6, 1945, when the US dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Now 88, she is among the few survivors of the horrific attack, which killed around 140,000 people, and is determined to pass on the lessons of history. But Yamada and other survivors fear their voices are not being heard. On the 77th anniversary of the bombing, FRANCE 24 reports on the survivors of the attack.

The young girl saw a plane and a flash, then nothing. A tree fell on her, but she survived and found her family. Today, she is determined to keep the painful memories of that fateful day alive.

Imperial Japan had run out of gas. Literally. They hadn’t the fuel to continue the war, they hadn’t the pilots, and they weren’t going to be getting off the ground, which even kamikaze pilots require.

The use of the two atomic bombs was in my opinion totally justified. Every other option was far worse.
Exactly, they were another aspect of that matrix of oriental hate fest. Essentially for Asia WWII lasted from 1931 to the Vietnam era. We experienced the 41-45 part as WWII.

There was a third bomb being prepped when Japan surrendered. It’s not a secret.
By the end of 1945 we had about 20-24 functional devices in inventory that would have been used if needed.
I refused to shut my business down and hide under my bed for the last 2+ years — even under government orders. The most disturbing thing about this fiasco was the number of FREEPERS who got on here and scolded me for that.

When discussing this subject, I’ve learned to dismiss one particular type of argument out of hand. It’s the one that begins with some variation of: “My father/grandfather/uncle/etc. would have been part of the invasion force if the bombs hadn’t been dropped …”
I can understand the sentiment, but that’s pretty much all it is. You can take the exact same approach to question and undermine every military action in human history. How many Americans weren’t born because Abraham Lincoln couldn’t just leave the Confederacy alone? :-P

If the police had come in and told you to shut down you would have meekly complied. You are only willing to do things that do not cost you anything.
You would have thrown your neighbors body down so the Japanese solders would not have gotten their boots muddy.
Sure Japan in the end had severe fuel shortages, but Kamikaze pilots require very little fuel. Regards
Admiral Matome Ugaki was recalled to Japan in February 1945 and given command of the Fifth Air Fleet on Kyūshū. The Fifth Air Fleet was assigned the task of kamikaze attacks against ships involved in the invasion of Okinawa, Operation Ten-Go, and began training pilots and assembling aircraft for the defense of Kyūshū, the first invasion target.
The Japanese defense relied heavily on kamikaze planes. In addition to fighters and bombers, they reassigned almost all of their trainers for the mission. More than 10,000 aircraft were ready for use in July (with more by October), as well as hundreds of newly built small suicide boats to attack Allied ships offshore.

I don’t agree with AC on many issues, but he was out front on not complying with COVID-19 shutdowns. While at the same time there were so called conservatives on FR that wanted people to not even leave their own property.

I wish the media would interview some of the gIs who were on board ships enroute from Europe to the pacific, in preparation for the invasion of the Japanese homeland, see how they felt about about the news .
As C-in-C his job was to effectuate enemy surrender with as few casualties among his men, as humanly possible. He could have made other decisions but he'd never have been able to face the parents, wives, children of the soldiers who'd have died if those bombs hadn't been dropped. He had an obligation, he met it.
If the Japanese didn't know war is hell they shouldn't have started one.
