Read a Truman biography years ago. He was quoted as saying, “I made the best decision I could at the time with the information I had.”

As C-in-C his job was to effectuate enemy surrender with as few casualties among his men, as humanly possible. He could have made other decisions but he'd never have been able to face the parents, wives, children of the soldiers who'd have died if those bombs hadn't been dropped. He had an obligation, he met it.

If the Japanese didn't know war is hell they shouldn't have started one.
