New longitudinal study links low religiosity to increased risk of Parkinson’s disease

According to a study published in the Journal of Religion and Health, low religiosity in adulthood is associated with an increased risk for developing Parkinson’s disease, among both England and United States populations.

Numerous cross-sectional studies have found an association between Parkinson’s disease and low religiosity, engagement in religious practices, and measures of self-transcendence, compared to age-matched control groups. Interestingly, individuals with Parkinson’s disease are more likely to report having spiritual beliefs. The past three decades has seen a rapid increase in the prevalence of Parkinson’s disease, and this trend is expected to continue with the aging population around the world. . . . . .

Religious individuals who reported that religion was not at all important in their lives had more than ten times the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease compared to religious individuals who reported religion was very important.

Two complex terminology for me.

Does the mean those who are not religious are at increased risk of Parkinsons ?

Does this also mean those who pray more and attend religious services are at lower risk of Park. ?

Or am I backwards ?

I thought Parkinson’s was related to exposure to neurotoxins:

Could it be that people with less religious beliefs are overrepresented in certain occupations?

Read it more carefully... This study refers to Parkinsonism in general, not specifically Parkinson’s Disease.

Parkinsonism is a broad term referring to several neurological conditions with movement issues — including Parkinson’s disease. Types of parkinsonism other than Parkinson’s disease are sometimes referred to as “Parkinson’s plus” or “atypical Parkinson’s disease.” Around 85 percent to 90 percent of diagnosed cases of parkinsonism are types other than Parkinson’s disease.

Sorta like, if I drink exactly 1.333 cups of water before I go to bed, the sun will rise tomorrow morning.

A fuzzy science uses fuzzy inadequately defined terms (”religious” and “spiritual”) to establish correlation and/or causation.

Not buying any of it.

Interesting. My stepmother’s sister, a totally godless woman, just passed away from Parkinson’s.

She casually dated married men, had abortions, did her own thing. She was one of the earliest Baby Boomers (born January 1946).

Still not sure of any correlation between Parkinson’s and her lifestyle, but I’m inclined to think that, due to their moral turpitude, the Baby Boomers in general are going to lack the longevity of the Greatest & Silent Generations. Too much sex, drugs, & rock ‘roll; not enough church or synagogue. Many are probably going to commit suicide.

I honestly don’t see many of them living to 80. (Or their evil spawn, the Millennials.)

Or expose themselves to more neurotoxins. One of the synthetic opiate drugs(meperidine) was reported to cause Parkinson’s in some drug abusers. Supposedly, it was one of the byproducts of meperidine “digestion” by the bodies decontamination chemical pathways.

It makes sense to me, but it is curious...

Religious individuals who reported that religion was not at all important in their lives had more than ten times the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease compared to religious individuals who reported religion was very important.

Two groups say they are religious.
Group one: religion was not at all important in their lives.
Group two: religion is very important in their lives.

I know religious people who believe in God but don't attend church or study the Bible. You could argue that calling them "religious" is a bit of a stretch and maybe there isn't much room between them and "non-religious" people.

The man at hethesda sick for 38 years… Jesus said to him, stop sinning hefore some worse happens to you. Some sickness is judgement, some is not. So why take the risk of something worse than 38 years of sickness.

Huh? Does he mean that some of the respondents "identified" with a religion by checking a denomination box?

Maybe there are neurotoxins in the weedicides on the golf course, if that's where they spend their Sunday mornings.
