A giant Chinese supplier of electric vehicle batteries decided to push back announcing a multibillion-dollar North American plant to supply Tesla Inc. and Ford Motor Co. due to tensions raised by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan, according to people familiar with the matter.
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., the world’s biggest maker of batteries for electric vehicles, has been considering at least two locations in Mexico near the Texas border, as well as sites in the U.S., for the plant. China’s CATL has been in an advanced stage of site selection and negotiating incentives, in anticipation of announcing its selection in the coming weeks.
CATL now plans to wait until September or October to make the announcement, the people familiar with the process said Aug. 2, asking not to be identified as the information isn’t public. The concern is that an announcement could stoke tensions at a sensitive time in U.S.-China ties amid the controversial Pelosi visit to Taiwan, they said.
A representative for CATL didn’t respond to requests for comment. Tesla also didn’t respond to requests for comment. Ford declined to comment.

Oddly enough... Billionaire Vice Chairman of China Battery Giant CATL Resigns effective Monday to pursue opportunities in battery charging and energy storage.
So why don’t we steal the tech, improve it and build our own damn plants? That’s what China has been doing for decades.
HA!
Rats hate Musk anyway.
delaying the EV roll out may be a blessing in disguise for sanity’s sake.
Stop that! You are making way too much sense! Can't have that!
What if our corporations treated China the same way?
I know.... a man can dream can’t he?
Ford’s plan is to use CATL as a bridge to produce 600,000 EV batteries until Ford builds its own battery plant in a few years.
A big plant to make batteries that won’t be used because our grids are already overloaded. Brilliant!
Better to re-activate the American plants that made transformers and steam turbine generators.
Could be a serendipitous turn of events. China can be the convenient fall guy.
Especially since their carbon footprint is akin to a Yeti's.
The whirlwind trip of Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, followed by her remarks of America’s support of Taiwan have convinced me that Nancy is the real acting president of the United States at this time.
She’s over there making news, delivering diplomatically shaped insults to China with mentions of Tianenmen Square. Just yesterday, one of Biden’s spokes men said, ‘No’ the White House does not support independance for Taiwan’.. Today, Nancy contradicts that statement, and with no explanation.
Nancy is playing the Reagan role right now.
Everyone knows that poor old Joe is simply not up to that kind of venture. He would become too tired, confused and inevitably, grumpy.
And even the Repukes are cheering her.
“Ford’s plan is to use CATL as a bridge to produce 600,000 EV batteries until Ford builds its own battery plant in a few years.”
I have an even BETTER plan:
Ford could push out it’s own plan to up EV production, keeping it’s fleet ICE-centric, and building only as many EV units as present battery supply levels will support, until the whole EV fad begins to fade nearing the end of this decade, as EV ownership and infrastructure support realities begin coming home to roost.
Gee, the Libs want everyone to drive EV’s but then they piss off China which has the largest EV battery production. Does anyone think China may hold off EV batteries to the US market, you know like a sanction..... Who would use a sanction to get what the want?
It falls over at the “build our own damn plants” stage. US corporations have to follow strangling regulations that foreign companies don’t - like ESG and DEI/DIE.
Ford doesn’t have *any* background in in-house battery production. The present battery supply number that they can get is also pretty low.
CAFE regs also make it pretty much impossible to keep an ICE-centric fleet going now.
I remind you: They don’t mind if you don’t have any cars to buy and have to rely on government owned mass transit. In fact, they prefer that over EVs.
The ones that are now house farms?
Dilemma: Two weeks ago, Ford announced layoffs for 8000 Detroit workers in the ICE side of the company.
