Trump: Ukraine Should Have Made Deal With Putin

Former President Donald Trump says Ukraine should have made a deal with Vladimir Putin to avoid the massive loss of life and destruction that has occurred since Russian troops invaded in late February.

Appearing on "The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show," Trump was asked about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his wife Olena Zelenska posing for a Vogue magazine cover shoot, which has been criticized by some since the country is at war.

Trump said he has not seen the photos, but added it is "probably not the greatest thing."

Trump repeated what he has said before, especially at recent rallies, that the invasion would never have happened if he had been president.

"You know, somebody said, 'Well, what would you do?' I said we wouldn't have had to do anything. [Putin] wouldn't have done it with me. He wouldn't have done it. At a minimum, [Ukraine] should have made a deal."

Ukraine, Trump said, "could have given up Crimea. They could have done something with NATO, 'OK, we're not gonna join NATO,' and you'd have a country, because I believe Putin wanted to make a deal."

Trump said he believes Putin no longer wants to make a deal.

"I think it's much tougher to make a deal," Trump added. "He's blowing up the whole place.

"I mean, he'll take over the whole place. And it's very, very sad to watch what happened with Ukraine. Very, very sad."

Now, Trump said, Putin will not be willing to settle for only part of the country, but wants the whole thing.

Putin set up troops on the border of Ukraine as a "great negotiation" tactic, Trump said, noting he called Putin a "good negotiator."

He drew criticism for calling Putin a "genius" and "very savvy" for moving troops in under the guise of "peacekeeping operations."

But, he added, "I never thought he was gonna go in. He would have never … he knew that he would have been under attack, and he understood that, and I told him that, and it would have never happened and to see what's happened now."

Trump knows that it wasn’t really the Ukraine’s deal to make. The U.S. State Department on the other hand...

On the brink of the 1846 to 1848 Mexican-American War, the US should have made a deal with Mexico.

It is not for the U.S. to say what compromises to it’s sovereignty Ukraine should make/should have made. Putin was not looking for a compromise.

We learned long ago that trying to tell Israel what compromises to make with the PLO did not, has not, and was not going to work. The PLO was not looking for a compromise.

Putin probably wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine had Trump still been president. But I’m not quite clear about the deal Trump suggested. Ukraine gives up the Crimea and promises not to join NATO.

What does Russia give return? A promise to behave? I’ve seen that movie before.

Side note: Crimea is ethnically majority Russian, and was part of Russia proper until 1954. So it’s not a great crime for Russia to want it back. And Putin was correct to worry about NATO expanding eastward.

But the instant Putin invaded Ukraine and starting killing innocents, he stopped being a sympathetic figure and became a war criminal. Of course, your mileage may vary on that.

Trump thinks deals. He simply won’t ever fight.

His unwillingness to fight allowed his enemies to beat him up and be none the worse for wear

If reelected he will still get beat up every day and provide no figithing response.

Mr President I know you are trying to make the Soviet lovers -who you think are part of your base- happy, but they are not your base.

Only problem that analysis is that it is false comparison.

1. Israel actually had to defend themselves, all Ukraine had to do was not rattle the swords by refusing to join NATO and quit shelling Ukes of Russian heritage or loyalties in Eastern Ukraine. You know, act like an honest government.
2. The Ukrainian Government is corrupt, Israel was not.

Making “a deal” with someone after they have invaded you is also known as ‘surrender’ isn’t it?

Trump is obviously out of touch with reality... You can’t ‘deal’ with a madman... And Putin is essentially a madman with small-man syndrome, often suffered by men with a smaller statures who also have access to power... See Hitler and Napoleon for further examples of this syndrome.

He wants to relive the glorious Russian history over again... A history that was never truly glorious but rather, bloody, brutal and absolutely senseless.

Ukraine and NATO opted out of each other in November. So number 1 isn’t true.
All governments are corrupt.

The fact is there was no deal to make. Putin demanded Ukraine lose their military and Russia final approval on foreign relations. All that deal would do was leave Ukraine open for a much easier invasion later. That’s not a deal. That’s suicide.

You, obviously, don't know what you are talking about.

Don't be a NPC.

Not until well after the "War/Invasion" had started. So yea, still true.
