Fake federal agent destroys retirees’ lives with scam, feds say. He’s going to prison
The Charlotte Observer ^ | August 1, 2022 | Kaitlyn Alanis

Retirees were tricked out of their savings in a telemarketing scheme involving fake federal agents, authorities say.

In one example, officials say a retired Massachusetts nurse was swindled out of over $900,000 in funds from her bank and retirement accounts. She thought her identity had been stolen and that she needed to transfer her money to new accounts — accounts owned by fraudsters pretending to work for agencies like the Social Security Administration and U.S. Department of Justice.

It’s funny how these scammers have thick Hindi accents and will use names like Tom Wilson or Steve Miller.

I got some threatening calls once, supposedly from the IRS. He had an obvious Aussie accent. Lol.

I guy I know flips that 180 degrees. He picks something outrageous for a last name, say Grandelmoppingbawth, Jr. He then demands that the scammer call him Mr. Grandelmoppingbawth Jr as a sign of respect.

A good time is had by all.

You’re supposed to gain wisdom when you get older but that’s bull. Most of those who get scammed in schemes like this are old fogies.

Time to take control of your phone and stop answering spam. My phone handles all that crap in the background without a peep sometimes dozens per day. They may as well be beating their heads on the wall

I love it when they get ahold of the entire phone system of the call centers.

I don't know if it's a lack of wisdom or if its unfamiliarity with new technology.

So some guy comes along claiming to be a federal agent, claiming to help people, and instead ruins their lives.

How on earth did they determine he was fake?

I don't know if it's a lack of wisdom or if its unfamiliarity with new technology.

Or a bit of naivety in just being too trusting of people, from back in the days when you could.

Plus a lot of older folks are dealing with legitimate cognitive impairment. I would not be too hard on any older person who got scammed especially if it's the IRS or SSA scammers.

No, not to prison. Hand him over to the retirees. Put him innna room with every impoverished oldster — each armed with a knife or a brick, their choice. They are old and poor, what are you gonna do to them?

Same should be done to every one of the blue state guv’nrs who sent sick folks into nursing homes, knowing that it would kill tens of thousands.

They stay inna room(s) until the screaming stops and there are requests for pudding — and a cleaning crew.

My question exactly; can the Charlotte Observer PROVE they were FAKE GOVERNMENT WORKERS, or are they REAL GOVERNMENT WORKERS just pretending to be fakes!

"The government should be running TV spots warning about this.

If they did people might finally figure out that the scammers and government are in he same business.

The reason these people fall for these scams are they don’t contact a 3rd party.

The real reason is they are elderly and have no knowledge on how the internet or emails work.........

They just have a computer and an internet connection........the rest, they have no knowledge of.

My 88 year old sister sent $3,000 in gift cards to an address in California. Her check book has been taken away so it won’t happen again. Poor Sis never questioned the Indian caller and didn’t know scams were run like this.

My wife gets at least 2 calls from India each day. She keeps them on the phone as long as possible to tie them and mess with their minds. Strange that I have never gotten any scam calls.
