Woman gets prison time after her GoFundMe duped donors out of $400,000

Katelyn McClure's story about a down-on-his-luck hero who'd spent his last $20 to help a stranger inspired thousands to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign that soon topped $400,000.

Her claim that she'd run out of gas on Interstate 95, where the homeless veteran came to her rescue, went viral in 2017. But after all the media frenzy, it turned out to be mostly bogus - and a huge chunk of the funds raised had been used on a luxury car, clothes, vacations and trips to casinos, federal prosecutors said. Now, McClure has been sentenced for her role in the three-person scheme - one that the Justice Department called "a GoFundMe scam that gained nationwide attention."

McClure, 32, pleaded guilty in March 2019 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. On Thursday, she was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison and was ordered to pay $400,000 in restitution.

The scam began outside a Philadelphia casino in 2017, prosecutors said. That's where McClure and her boyfriend at the time, Mark D'Amico, met Johnny Bobbitt, a homeless veteran, according to court documents. But McClure had never run out of gas and Bobbitt hadn't spent his last $20 to help her, a federal prosecutor said in 2018.

That closes the book on the GoFundMe Bonnie and Clyde. The ex-boyfriend got 27 months in April.

Johnny Bobbitt's sentencing got postpone to a date to be determined. They should just cut him loose. Clearly, he was just a pawn in this scam.

On Thursday, she was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison and was ordered to pay $400,000 in restitution.

So how does that work exactly? She gets the year in jail but how is the $400,000 getting paid back?

Does it ever get paid back? Do they garnish her wages going forward until it gets paid back?

You can never tell what is going to touch people into donating. The Greenwood mall shooter hero only has $62k in his gofundme and he saved dozens of lives. The pizza dude who saved 5 lives by rushing into a fire hit over $500k but he was physically injured.

GoFundMe allowed this to continue; but removed the Rittenhouse, Canadian truckers & bodega owner’s pages.

Yep. I was one of the suckers who donated originally - gave $100. GoFraudMe claimed that it had returned all funds. BS. I didn’t get a penny back, not even after I inquired about it directly.

Yea, but saving lives with a gun is not woke, thus the smaller donations.

This case is proceeding as slow as a Mueller Investigation or
maybe John Durham levels. Maybe the courts are clogged.

I think COVID gummed up the works across the country in terms of the court system.

So is it illegal if I put out a go fund me to fund my landcruiser trips to the desert to study the ancient shorelines of inland seas that disappeared due to climate change?

GFM is scammer central. There is zero accountability or mechanism to check whether anything being posted is true. Wonder why she was punished out of all the others? Bigger fish?

Interestingly enough, has the perpetrators just laid low until the spotlight cooled they could very well have pulled it off.

But their greed exceeded their intellect and now they are doing a couple of years in the can.

It’s kind of strange that the argument over the division of spoils somehow became public. But people who do stuff like this don’t think of consequences, meaning that impulse control is a problem.

GoFundMe let this grow because their cut would be bigger.
Did they really return the donations?

I refer to it as “Go Scam Me”

The year and a day is important because it means she’ll do less - it qualifies her for time off for good behavior. My recollection is that if the judge had sentenced her to a year, she would have had to do the full time.

Didn't his wife already do that?
