Mayor Cantrell and her top aides have spent more than $79,000 of general city funds on seven trips since the beginning of 2022, according to records obtained by Gambit.
That figure, however, doesn’t include recent jaunts to Switzerland and the south of France. The price tag of those excursions could take several more days to produce, according to the city attorney’s office.
The mayor was joined in Switzerland earlier this summer by local musicians who were reportedly compensated for their representation at a local jazz festival, though it is still unclear how much and by whom.
That trip was described by a city spokesperson as a chance to promote tourism and cement the city's reputation as a "world-class global city and cultural destination."
"Mayor Cantrell believes it's important to continue to forge and formalize these international partnerships to facilitate a greater sense of understanding and cooperation between continents," the spokesperson said.
Mayoral travel is not uncommon. There’s incentive to leave the city for a host of reasons, from meeting with local officials to discuss common problems, to promoting the city’s image and advocating for New Orleans’ needs at a national and international level. Several of Cantrell’s recent meetings have been especially centered around climate change, according to staffers.
But some recent trips — including the one to Switzerland and three weeks later, the French Riviera — have raised eyebrows at City Hall and the public alike. Going to Europe twice in the past month to attend international music festivals and signing ceremonial “sister city agreements” has coincided with residents’ declining quality of life.
Complaints in recent months have included surging crime, stalled infrastructure projects and the unreliability of basic municipal services such as trash pickup and functioning traffic lights.

Sounds like she doesn’t want to be there
That’s gas money to the local grocery store these days.
Another Dem who sees the public treasury as their personal slush fund.
Is her armed security detail a different line item?
If she took a sailing ship and then walked the rest of the way, no problemo. Otherwise, she contributed to evil Global Warming. And Global Warming is only thing that’s really important these days.
At a minimum, Mayor Cantrell deserves a stern lecture from Greta Thunberg.
And allegedly the current per capita #1 murder city. 🤔😲
There is no reason for any US *mayor* to go to Switzerland.
Hey NOLA, keep voting for this, you’re doing great!
Add the travel to the amount of money she spent on the giant hair pic and those revolving pieces of crap that are replacing Robert E. Lee at what was once called Lee Circle, now remained to something.
Inspiration for a new book title:
Junior High Psychopath
Say it ain't so, Jerry!
(That figure, however, doesn’t include recent jaunts to Switzerland and the south of France.)
The taxpayers won’t be able to figure it out. 🐑🐑🐑
No mayor of an American city should travel to Switzerland on the taxpayer’s dime.
I've looked into this a little lately and New Orleans is certainly right there near the top. Two others that you might not suspect are St. Louis and Memphis.
Well, she didn't just go to Switzerland she went to the French Riviera too!
And Switzerland still retains some of it's former bank secrecy laws -
but she shrewdly didn't let her underlings access the accounts -
she did it herself. That shows moxy!

So, have they renamed Lee Circle? Been around it a few times years back.
Exactly. Clearly, there is the need to travel for official business. However, when your city has problems, as the article says, such as non-functioning traffic lights, going to a music festival in Europe should not be on your priority list.
OMG!! SHE’S BLACK!
