Republican Sen. Rob Portman Cosponsoring Marriage Equality Bill (such a helpful "Republican" on his way out the door)

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, one of the few Republicans to support LGBTQ+ rights, has announced he will cosponsor the Respect for Marriage Act, which would write equal marriage rights into federal law.

Portman, who has a gay son, first announced his support for marriage equality in 2013. He made his support for the Respect for Marriage Act clear by agreeing to cosponsor it in the Senate, Cleveland’s ABC affiliate reports.

The House passed the bill Tuesday by a margin of 267 to 157, with 47 Republicans joining all Democrats in voting for it. It is designed to maintain marriage equality even if the Supreme Court overturns the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, which established equal marriage rights nationwide in 2015. In a concurring opinion when the court overturned the Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision, Justice Clarence Thomas said the justices should reverse Obergefell and certain other rulings on individual rights.

Just like Scott Brown helping out Harry Reid repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell in the 2012 lame duck session.

The summary looks like they are deferring to the States and emphasizing “full faith and credit”, unless I read it wrong.

From https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/8404

Introduced in House (07/18/2022)

Respect for Marriage Act

This bill provides statutory authority for same-sex and interracial marriages.

Specifically, the bill repeals and replaces provisions that define, for purposes of federal law, marriage as between a man and a woman and spouse as a person of the opposite sex with provisions that recognize any marriage that is valid under state law. (The Supreme Court held that the current provisions were unconstitutional in United States v. Windsor in 2013.)

The bill also repeals and replaces provisions that do not require states to recognize same-sex marriages from other states with provisions that prohibit the denial of full faith and credit or any right or claim relating to out-of-state marriages on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin. (The Supreme Court held that state laws barring same-sex marriages were unconstitutional in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015; the Court held that state laws barring interracial marriages were unconstitutional in Loving v. Virginia in 1967.) The bill allows the Department of Justice to bring a civil action and establishes a private right of action for violations.

The shame I feel about campaigning for Scott Brown, standing in the snow, is only alleviated slightly by knowing that the scumbag Democrat Martha Coakley who is as bad or worse ideologically as Elizabeth Warren, but perhaps not as dumbly stupid as her.

These people allow the Left to say “bi-partisan support”.

I despise them all.

This is the reason I don’t support term limits - every congressman/senator at some point will become a lame duck doing great damage to our country. Maybe an age limit?

Dunno why people think there will be a red wave this fall. Between the cheating and the lack of enthusiasm for RINOs, I predict a narrow GOP victory for the House, and the Senate is up in the air.

People are allowed to believe any kind of nonsense they want but putting gay marriage into law is basically on the same level as putting Bigfoot on the endangered species list.

Republicans will win but they are doing whatever it takes to make sure there isn’t a red wave. They are deathly afraid of having to actually do something.

What does the + stand for? Pedophilia? Marrying an animal? Marrying a hologram? Please elucidate.

the Respect for Marriage Act

Who names these things? They have no shame. Write a law that drives a nail in the coffin of marriage as has been practiced in all history while pushing an abomination God never intended and, of course, you call it “the Respect for Marriage Act”

Satanic

I don’t know how we undo the damage Chief Justice Roberts did in dictate homosexual marriage, but this should not be confirmed with a new law. Anyone Republican especially that supports it should find it career limiting. Not sure what occurs with idiots like Porter who is leaving, but sad they prove lies to everything on their way out.

With “Repubicans” like Protman (and several others), is it any wonder that the country is in the terribe shape that it is. He has never fought for conservative principles but simply spent time “going along” with democrats.

When Christ returns He is not gonna be interested in excuses of anyone manning the proverbial watchtowers that they were nice an tolerant towards spiritually perishing, but only expecting that they did their task and they warned sinners of the terrible judgment to come.

Going along to get along has become a major on ramp, maybe THE major on ramp, to the broad way that leads to destruction.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is what a whole wing of the party are about, but of course “moderates” never think they are the cause of reversals ... they try to get along with Democrats and are statesmen like.

People think there will be a red wave because public opinion polls are indicating that.

there is lack of enthusiasm for “RINO” candidates on Free Republic, but Free Republic is not a cross section of Republicans overall, or the public at large who will be voting.
