U.S. and Allies May Give Ukraine Fighter Jets in NATO Challenge to Russia

Ukraine may be given Western fighter jets and pilot training to help its forces fight Russia, according to a senior American military figure.

Moscow has air superiority over the Ukrainian air force's assortment of Soviet-era aircraft like MiG-29s and other Cold War-era planes.

But the U.S. Air Force chief of staff, General Charles Q. Brown Jr., acknowledged that the U.S. and its allies were considering providing Ukraine with new planes.

Such a move would step up Western involvement in the war and mark a departure from when the Biden administration ruled out a deal in which Poland's MiG fighters were to be given to Ukraine in exchange for U.S.-manufactured F-16s.

It would also be a more direct move by NATO allies to challenge Russian aggression following months of U.S. efforts, in public at least, of trying not to escalate the war in Ukraine.

NATO members are pledged to defend one another if attacked.
Ukraine is not part of NATO.
But NATO is going to war against Russia in defense of Ukraine.
Russia is going to notice.
The Russian “justification” for invading Ukraine was based in part on the idea that NATO was expanding to the East and that this could be seen as Western aggression against Russia.
I’d say Putin got that part right.

I think a big part here is the US wanting to assess Russia’s combat capabilities. Giving the Ukrainian pilots newer planes is a good way to that, while at the same time, not having to explain US pilots being shot down.

I think that you have it backwards. The Russian invasions, 2014 and 2022, justify Ukraine wanting to be part of NATO.

It takes years to train a fighter pilot. Even if you have trained pilots, it takes a year or two to learn a new aircraft. This is insanity.

This basically boils down to a gesture of support.

The war will be over before those pilots are ready to fly F-16s over Ukraine.

Of course Ukraine wants to be part of NATO. It makes the US the guarantor of their sovereignty up to and including nuclear war. Good deal for them, not so much for us. NATO expansion was a colossal mistake.

Pilots too, right? Someone needs to fly. Aircraft carriers to house the planes. After all, Ukrainian airfields aren’t outfitted. Intel and reconnaissance aircraft to protect the carriers…

I’d rather they just gave the damn things to Poland and let them have them before Ukraine was even allowed to smell their exhaust.

I’m not supporting Putin in what he did, but I’m not blind as to WHY he did it either.

Part of the breakup of the soviet union was a handshake deal that no former Soviet block nation would be allowed into NATO, we kept our spirit of honoring that about as well as we did on our dealings agreed to with Native Americans way back when.
