In what could be the biggest economic investment in Central Texas history, technology giant Samsung is considering building 11 new chipmaking facilities in the Austin area over the next two decades, a stunning move that could lead to nearly $200 billion in new investment and create more than 10,000 jobs, according to documents filed with the state.

Fresh off announcing plans to build a $17 billion semiconductor factory in Taylor, Samsung could increase its investment in the region by more than 10 times that amount if the proposed facilities were to be built.

That is amazing if it happens.

People are smarting up by building chip factories in the USA.

I just don’t understand the fascination with Austin for tech growth. Dallas makes so much more sense.

Austin is a congested homeless encampment without the roads for any more growth.

“Austin is a congested homeless encampment without the roads for any more growth.”

You got some points. We need more highways, but we get more bike lanes.

Homeless encampments have been going away since Prop B.

“On May 1, 2021, Austin voters approved Proposition B, making it a criminal offense (Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine) for anyone to sit, lie down, or camp in public areas and prohibiting solicitation of money or other things of value at specific hours and locations.”

I love Austin. My son is at UT. Been here 19 years.

I do live outside the city limits (extra-territorial jurisdiction its called). I don’t vote in Austin city elections, but I don’t have their crazy laws.

Moved away to Fort Worth 3 years ago. Was in Austin for 20 years; never looked back. I hear they’re going to do a major overhaul of 35, which I just can’t imagine. It’s already bumper to bumper 24 hours a day.

The traffic in Austin (and the culture shift to a mini-Portland) drive us away.

It was already a giant parking lot in 2019, I can’t imagine how bad it has become.
