And then there was the book All the President’s Men by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two Washington Post reporters who’d supposedly brought Nixon down. When it came out in 1974, I read it avidly. And two years later I was enthralled by the movie version, written by William Goldman and directed by Alan J. Pakula.
But there was one thing - in the book and the movie - that always puzzled me.
I’ll describe it as it’s presented in the film. Woodward (Robert Redford) meets late at night in a parking garage with his secret source, known as Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), who drops a bombshell. The Watergate cover-up, he says, wasn’t really about the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex. Its actual purpose was to protect a whole raft of covert operations that involved “the entire U.S. intelligence community - the FBI, CIA, Justice.”

Would explain acceptance of Male “Women Athletes of the Year”.
Bet one would have to go back a long time to find who the first who lied about the obvious for a big (BIG) paycheck.
Yep. Alger Hiss was why they went after Nixon hammer and tong.
Hiss was such a liar, when confronted in his trial with the undeniable evidence of his typewriter in his house which he used to transcribe classified documents, he said “I will never know how Whittaker Chambers got into my house and used my typewriter.”
It was such a stupid, idiotic statement by a man trapped in his web of lies, that the courtroom erupted with snickers and laughter.
They are all like that. All of them. Without exception.

The killed JFK.
They took down Nixon.
Reagan was shot — but (probably) just by a lunatic.
They took down Trump.
Within my lifetime, every single president who truly loved this country (note that in 60+ years, we’ve only had 4 such presidents) has been targeted by the Deep State. And the Deep State always wins.
the same group that removed Kennedy removed Nixion and tried to kill Reagan. today we are dealing with an incompetent version of this group who are the individuals that were mentored by this group of dc politician’s and corporate America.
Years ago I went to a talk at ASU by John Dean talking about his book, Blind Ambition. He claimed he finally had to fess up and tell the truth.
After it was over I left by the back of ASU through the paths of the college and ran into him. I got his autograph (I was young and blinded by the whole thing) and said to him, ‘well, at least you finally did tell the truth’
and he did a doubletake.
It was then my blinders fell off.
Yep.
Interesting, thanks
Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein wouldn’t have been able to do $#it if Watergate took place today. But media had a monopoly on the news today. Too bad for Tricky Dick. (BTW he was a RINO).
I read the book Silent Coup, but it was a few years ago. Can’t remember everything. Why would the CIA want Nixon gone, or was this more the media wanting him gone?
John Dean- Prostitution- John Dean’s wife.

You can add RINOs to your statement.
True. But John Dean was a treasonous disloyal snake. And still is.

People like Dean lie so often and so reflexively they can't recognize the truth anymore. Hillary Clinton also comes to mind.
They have to do everything they can to protect their lies.
I think the biggest story of Watergate is the complicity of the media and how it aided abetted the fraud. It was one of two events that signaled the media’s commitment to abandoning the news and controlling public opinion. The other event was WJC’s first campaign and how the media made the deliberate decision to protect him from the Jennifer Flowers scandal.
Reading in the comments section, someone mentioned the irony of the Clintons getting into FBI files of persons they regarded as opponents or threats. It made me think of BKO’s book “Hell To Pay” and how she herself thought it ironic that she was doing the same sort of investigative work on the Clintons over Filegate as young Hillary was years earlier over Nixon and Watergate.
Yep, Cronkite and Dan Rather were right up in the mix of it all.
