McConnell knows this – and is working to counteract it.
Whether any major candidates – DeSantis, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence – ultimately jump in is, of course, outside of the control of both Trump and McConnell.
And whether anyone who does run can actually beat Trump is a question no one can answer right now.
The Point: McConnell clearly prefers someone other than Trump as the party’s nominee in 2024, so he’s doing what he can to encourage them to not be bullied by the former President from running.

Unfortunately for him, there's nothing he can do to stop the juggernaut that's coming.
Only a health crisis or meaningful (not ticky-tack) indictment is going to stop Trump from running in 2024. And he will clear the field rapidly, whether Mitch likes it or not.
DeSantis has no intention of becoming Pence 2, another guy who had the support of Trump's base but who lost that support -- and his political career -- in an instant. Ron is way too smart for that.
It doesn't matter if DeSantis ran, though. It would end the same way.
I'm in flyover country in Pennsyltucky. Many of the Trump flags still fly, and the ones that aren't flying now are sitting ready on standby.
Nobody else, from either party, can compete with that. Everyone knows it, and that's why people from both sides who don't want Trump to run and win in 2024 are doing whatever they can now to try to stop the machine from revving up.
Mitch is scared. But it's already way too late.
Why would Mitch be scared? There is nothing that Trump can do to him.

Mitch hates Trump and wants Trump out of the way. He’s scared of Trump’s power and control.
I’m not saying he’s scared of what Trump will do to him specifically, but he’s scared of Trump fully regaining control of the party. Which Trump is on track to do.
This time, though, there will be no “Russia”, “Ukraine call” or “1/6 investigation” to stop Trump. And so on.
Mitch wants the party back for the blue-blooders. Not only can Trump prevent that in the short-term, by instilling more MAGA people in Congress he can prevent it from happening in the long-term, too.
That is what Mitch fears.
They do love him when he’s useful. No doubt on that.
Thats fine, as long as Trump has the podium as Speaker of the House, post-Novewmber this year, before and after the 2024 election, holding even a different GOP POTUS’ feet to the fire.

The whole purpose of the NBC requirement is to keep foreigners out.
