Mitch McConnell thinks the 2024 Republican race is going to be crowded
CNN ^ | July 19, 2022 | Chris Cillizza

(snip)

At least part of Trump’s reported interest in getting in the race before the 2022 midterms are over is to stake his claim and dare anyone else to challenge him.

McConnell knows this – and is working to counteract it.

Whether any major candidates – DeSantis, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence – ultimately jump in is, of course, outside of the control of both Trump and McConnell.

And whether anyone who does run can actually beat Trump is a question no one can answer right now.

The Point: McConnell clearly prefers someone other than Trump as the party’s nominee in 2024, so he’s doing what he can to encourage them to not be bullied by the former President from running.

I hope the old bastard lives long enough too see Trump back in and see all his scheming come to complete failure. Yes he did good with Judges but that does not make up for selling out America like he has(and with the election steal, God sees all Mitch). God will have the last laugh on him and his ilk.

I agree, she is not a serious contender. Nor is Pence.

The only other person with any hope at all is DeSantis, and he’s not going to run. He has a real future, unlike the grifter gang.

Well, only from a bunch of people positioning for the next race. It will be over quick.

The great part of the Old Crow speaking up like this is that he realizes he has to deal with it. Mitch likes to ignore Trump, blow off questions about him. Now he knows he can’t do it any longer because there is talk of Trump announcing on Labor Day.

That’s only like 7 weeks away. Everything could be just about over (provided the GOP does ok in November) in 7 weeks and so Mitch HAS to talk now.

In short, Trump is winning here. Mitch has been “gotten to” and so he has to speak out when before he would just ignore Trump.

The smarter candidates will stay out (barring a health incident with President Trump). If you get in and pull John Ellis Bush numbers, your brand is ruined forever. Pence did not run, so there were fewer quotations from him about Trump and from Trump about him, whereas someone like Scott Walker who could have been an excellent VP candidate got into too much back and forth with Trump to make it easy.

I don’t see anyone besides DeSantis or maybe Pence pulling more than 10%. You don’t get delegates that way. Smarter for most to wait for ‘28.

Yes. Very quickly.

Once DeSantis bows out, I think all hope will be lost among even the most die-hard of the Never Trumpers.

I guess at that point they will look to the various DA’s to try to give them any kind of indictment of Trump.

Good assessment and I agree.

Pence might run because he may not have any real viable future. DeSantis is next man up and will only get stronger. No shot he runs against Trump.

china mitch is protecting the family business

It seems obvious, doesn't it?

The family includes in-laws with significant ties to the CCP. The group (together with naive Rino's) wishes to have a comfortable relationship with the U.S., albeit with China holding the major position.

China also wishes to leverage a controlling position with the rest of the world.

Trump presents a formidable obstacle.
