Stephen Holden Doane (October 13, 1947 – March 25, 1969) was a United States Army officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War.
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. First Lt. Doane was serving as a platoon leader when his company, engaged in a tactical operation, abruptly contacted an enemy force concealed in protected bunkers and trenches. Three of the leading soldiers were pinned down by enemy crossfire. One was seriously wounded. After efforts of 1 platoon to rescue these men had failed, it became obvious that only a small group could successfully move close enough to destroy the enemy position and rescue or relieve the trapped soldiers, 1st Lt. Doane, although fully aware of the danger of such an action, crawled to the nearest enemy bunker and silenced it. He was wounded but continued to advance to a second enemy bunker. As he prepared to throw a grenade, he was again wounded. Undaunted, he deliberately pulled the pin on the grenade and lunged with it into the enemy bunker, destroying this final obstacle. 1st Lt. Doane's supreme act enabled his company to rescue the trapped men without further casualties. The extraordinary courage and selflessness displayed by this officer were an inspiration to his men and are in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army

I’M GLAD FOR ALL OF YOU! I GATHER THAT SPARSE RAINFALL THIS FAR INTO SUMMER IS AN ANOMALY, YES?
WE HAD A MAJOR T-STORM MIDDLE OF LAST WEEK, BUCKETS OF RAIN AND HIGH WINDS. HOW HIGH? 14”-18” DIA OAK CAME DOWN. NOT UPROOTED! TRUNK BROKEN 8’-10’ HIGH. LEAFY BRANCHES EVERYWHERE, BUT NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE SO IT’S NOT A HIT...BUT CLOSE ENOUGH!
NOW, IT’S LUVIE AND RADU’S TURN FOR SOME RAIN.

It barely survived and only because I woke up a bit early and turned it off. LOL! We got up to 99. That magic number that doesn’t sound as hot as 100. :)
What kind of day did y’all have? Any rain? Did you enjoy sleeping in this morning? I was jealous. LOL!
I take it that 8/10ths is on top of the inch you got yesterday? GREAT!! Fingers crossed for luck you do get more on Tuesday ... or sooner.
We’re still praying for some rain here. Nary a drop today and I don’t know if we’ll be lucky tomorrow. The forecast shows it fizzling out as it moves across the state.
Good to see the kiddos are still faring well, with no more losses. It won’t be long before you won’t be able to tell them from Momma. They’re getting big so fast.
I have to admit this one brought tears to my eyes. Such a heavy decision to make for anyone, especially one so young, to make but he did and he followed through with it.
GOOD EVENING, TIGERHAWK...THIS WAS THE FIRST REAL RAIN SINCE LAST YEAR. USUALLY WE GET A NICE CLEANSING RAIN IN SPRING THAT CLEANS ALL THE LEAVES AND STREETS, ETC. NOT THIS YEAR.
I STOOD OUT ON THE DECK IN THE RAIN FEEDING DUCKS AND ENJOYING SAID RAIN.
WOW!! THAT WAS SOME STORM...BREAKING THE TREE!!! THANKFULLY NO DAMAGE.
YES...IT IS NOW TIME FOR RADU AND LUVIE TO GET SOME GOOD RAIN!

Things are still hot and steamy here and we're still praying for rain. Had a good weekend at the museum. A little slow Friday, as usual, but a nice steady flow yesterday.
Friday, the man who owns those gorgeous cannons he's loaned to the museum stopped by with some large posters regarding the 24 pounder Howitzer. One was a large photo of him firing it at one of the events he attended some time back. It's a great shot.
Your alarm got lucky then. LOL It does kinda stink to wake up before it goes off though. “Why couldn’t I get those last few minutes of sleep?”
99’s pretty hot, no doubt, but at least you can say it was double digits instead of triple. Gotta enjoy any breaks you can get.
It was low 90s here and steamy, steamy, steamy. A few tiny pop-up showers in the area but nothing over us. A front’s coming through overnight and it looks impressive now. It’ll be nothing by the time it gets over here early in the morning. We MIGHT get a little shower but we aren’t banking on it. *sigh*
LOL! I wondered if you spent some time on the deck enjoying the rain after so long without any.
YIKES, TigerHawk!!! That was a doozy of a storm you had! It takes a strong wind to snap a tree that large. I’m glad it didn’t hit the house!
Luvie and I would be thrilled to have some rain but we’ll pass on that kind of a storm. LOL
Yes! They said no more til tonight, but we got it last night. Now they say maybe more on Tuesday. The grass is very happy, and not crispy in places.
Praying for you and the corn to get some rain soon.
I feel bad that you can’t get some decent rain. It’s bad enough here but we totally don’t have crops to deal with in this county. Just our lawns that look like pastureland. Except for ours, thanks to hubby and a huge water bill.

Thanks, Kathy! We sure do need that rain. But we don’t need to lose any trees! They’re the only thing that is keeping this house from being an oven. And radu needs to see the crops in her area greening up again.
Kinda nice when they’re wrong with the forecast and you get rain sooner than they predicted. The plant life there looks better already. Snake Island, in the middle of the lake, has been brown for a while and it’s green again now.
I’m praying they’re wrong with their prediction for us and we do get a decent rainfall in the morning. All the crops around here can’t take much more of this heat and dryness. There’s a nice breeze tonight but because of it, there’s no dewfall to help things out.
Isn’t that a cool photo? Wish I could’ve been there at the time. I love to be around cannons being fired.

HERE’S SOMETHING THAT MADE ME MARVEL. HAD A WHITE BIRCH OFF THE BACK PORCH THAT HAD THREE TRUNKS GROWING FROM THE SAME SPOT. MY WIFE ENJOYS HUMMING BIRD FEEDERS SO I PUT ONE ON THE TRUNK NEAREST THE PORCH, SO WE COULD WATCH THEM FEED. ONE YEAR AFTER THE LEAVES HAD FALLEN AND THE HUMMING BIRDS HAD GONE OFF TO WHEREVER THEY GO OFF TO, THAT TRUNK FELL AND HIT THE HOUSE. NOT MUCH DAMAGE, AND THE INSURANCE WAS PAID UP SO IT WAS NO BIG DEAL, BUT I DECIDED THAT THE OTHER TWO TRUNKS HAD TO COME DOWN ALSO.
NOW, FOR SOME REASON THAT NO SANE PERSON CAN EVER UNDERSTAND (MAYBE IT WAS WATCHING “SHANE” AS A KID) I DECIDED TO TAKE THEM DOWN WITH AN AXE INSTEAD OF A CHAIN SAW. TOOK ME PARTS OF TWO DAYS, AND COST ME RAW HANDS DESPITE THE GLOVES...BUT IT PLEASED ME, AND TAUGHT ME TO NOT THINK OF DOING ANYTHING LIKE THAT AGAIN.
THE NEXT SPRING THE HUMMINGBIRDS CAME BACK, WENT TO THE EXACT SPOT THE FEEDER HAD BEEN, HOVERED THERE FOR MINUTES AT A TIME, AND DIDN’T SEEM TO COMPREHEND THAT THE FEEDER WAS NO LONGER THERE. THEY DID THIS WELL INTO THE SUMMER BEFORE THEY GAVE IT UP. SHOWED THAT THEY WERE THE SAME BIRDS FROM AT LEAST THE YEAR BEFORE, AND HAD SOME SORT OF INTERNAL GEO-LOCATION MECHANISM BUILT INTO THEM. I WAS ASTONISHED! I CAN’T UNDERSTAND HOW A PERSON CAN SEE THE MARVELS OF NATURE AND BE AN ATHEIST. MAYBE THEY’RE ALL URBANITES.
I HOPE YOU AND LUVIE GET SOME RAIN. SOON!
We don’t care if the yard is brown. No one sees it but us and Hubby doesn’t mind not having to mow. LOL He did break down and mow this weekend to knock down the seed stems that sprang up after the inch of rain we got last weekend.
It just breaks my heart to go anywhere because I drive past fields of sad crops. A lot of unhappy farmers here these days.
I wouldn’t mind a little storm with some pretty lightning. LOL But nothing major, thankyouverymuch.
Whew! You’d mentioned no structural damage and I thought it had been close to the house but just missed it. That’s a lot of tree to come down.
I hope you have a good chainsaw for any future tree cutting you need to do. OUCH at the thought of cutting the birch with an axe.
Hummers do seem to have some sort of geo-location mechanism because we’ve had them show up here year after year. I wouldn’t put the feeder out until I saw them show up to the spot outside the kitchen window where I hung the feeder.
When we moved from the old farmhouse over to the house we’re in now, it took them a few weeks to find the feeders I hung over here. They came back last year but we haven’t seen the first one this year. :-(
The wonders of nature. People who don’t appreciate it are missing out on so much. One of the most magical things to watch are fireflies waking up for a night of flitting around. I love to step outside just as the sun sets and stand well out into the yard. The grass all around comes to life with tiny flickering lights as the fireflies slowly rise. What a beautiful sight.
Our yard is the only thing I like about this house so I need for it to look decent. It would be too depressing to see it look like the dirt yards all over town.
About the same way you feel when you see those beautiful green fields become more sickly looking by the day.
Dang it! Send rain!
