WASHINGTON — First, he killed a plan that would have forced power plants to clean up their climate-warming pollution. Then, he shattered an effort to help consumers pay for electric vehicles. And, finally, he said he could not support government incentives for solar and wind companies or any of the other provisions that the rest of his party and his president say are vital to ensure a livable planet.
Senator Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, who took more campaign cash from the oil and gas industry than any other senator, and who became a millionaire from his family coal business, independently blew up the Democratic Party’s legislative plans to fight climate change. The swing Democratic vote in an evenly divided Senate, Mr. Manchin led his party through months of tortured negotiations that collapsed on Thursday night, a yearlong wild goose chase that produced nothing as the Earth warms to dangerous levels.
“It seems odd that Manchin would choose as his legacy to be the one man who single-handedly doomed humanity,” said John Podesta, a former senior counselor to President Barack Obama and founder of the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank.
Privately, Senate Democratic staff members seethed and sobbed on Thursday night, after more than a year of working nights and weekends to scale back, water down, trim and tailor the climate legislation to Mr. Manchin’s exact specifications, only to have it rejected inches from the finish line.
“Rage keeps me from tears,” Senator Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts and a longtime advocate for climate legislation, wrote on Twitter late Thursday.
Mr. Manchin’s refusal to support the climate legislation, along with steadfast Republican opposition, effectively dooms the chances that Congress will pass any new law to tackle global warming for the foreseeable future

This must be that Manchin is not willing to get rid of the filibuster. Because without that, and even with the assistant Democrat Republicans, they don’t have 60 for cloture.

Why hasn’t Manchin declared himself a Republican?? On a scale of political positions he seems to lean more Republican than Democrat.

I wish I could vote for Manchin. WV Democrats don’t sound like Demonicrats. They still live in reality: “Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge mountains, Shenandoah river...”.
I live in WV and I vote against him every election. Manchin is for Manchin only!

Manchin is no Republican. He is far left on just about every issue. He is just not insane enough to go along with a borrow and spend agenda that would undeniably cause hyper-inflation for many years to come. He also is smart enough to know that eliminating the Senate legislative filibuster would immediately turn around and bite the Democrats in the butt just like when Harry Reid unilaterally eliminated the Senate filibuster for presidential appointments.

The left is trying to get rid of Biden. Maybe they’re hoping manchin will run. They know they’ve gone to far left….
Because Manchin could not win a Republican primary. Don't forget that Manchin voted to impeach Trump twice. He only voted for Kavanaugh because it came up before the 2018 Mid-Terms. Once he was safely re-elected, he voted to impeach Trump. If Manchin switched to become Republican, Trump would endorse someone else in the primary.
The same thing happened with Arlen Specter in PA. Once he changed from Republican to Democrat, he was defeated in the Democrat primary.
