The Associated Press announced an update to its stylebook Wednesday, advising journalists to quit using phrases like “assault rifle” or “assault weapon.”
The AP tweeted the update, noting, “The preferred term for a rifle that fires one bullet each time the trigger is pulled, and automatically reloads for a subsequent shot, is a semi-automatic rifle. An automatic rifle continuously fires rounds if the trigger is depressed and until its ammunition is exhausted.”
The update continues: “Avoid assault rifle and assault weapon, which are highly politicized terms that generally refer to AR- or AK-style rifles designed for the civilian market, but convey very little meaning about the actual function of the weapon.”
The Second Amendment Foundation’s Alan Gottlieb responded to the AP’s focus on changing terminology on semiautomatic rifles, saying, “It’s about time the media realized the terms ‘assault rifle’ and ‘assault weapon’ are inflammatory and meaningless. Those terms have become part of the gun prohibition lobby’s lexicon, and unfortunately, journalists across the country have been all-too-willing to adopt their vocabulary and repeatedly use it in their reports.

Or "BABY-KILLERS".
Preach it!
A knife, a pipe, a hammer, fingernails can be considered assault weapons.
You’re right because the pro-murder babies crowd is not 8n favor of actual choice.
If they were, they’d be fine with crisis pregnancy centers. But they are not.
The OLD term had rifle in it as well. They got rid of ASSAULT. Hearing politicians say ASSAULT rifle was stupid. That phrase is illigitimate.
I count it as an unfortunate marketing strategy to haved assigned that model number to any rifle. It invites cement heads to display their ignorance bigly, as commentary has borne out.
You are just no fun…/s
No one that knows AP thinks they are giving up on gun confiscation or anything else corrupt.
I'm guessing they have agreed to start a campaign to demonize all semiautomatic firearms; that is what they have been wanting to ban for decades anyhow.
While we are at it..i will never refer to two men as being married.
Assault Press
That is certainly a step in the right direction!
“Interesting move by the Asspress word commandants. Do they realize how much people hate them?”
I had to look twice to be sure this was not from the Bee. I can’t believe the Ass Press said something that makes sense and is factually correct.
“Fact check”, “dis/misinformation”, “white nationalist”, “unproven vote fraud”, (add your own here) are highly politicized terms.
What? I’m surprised they didn’t want change it to “weapons of war”. Trump is having a great second term right. I can’t wait until his third term.
In the 70s the AP Stylebook was the good standard for objective writing
Not necessarily. This reset of the verbiage will broaden the scope of what they want to ban. If so-called “assault rifles” are also semi-auto, let’s just ban the whole damn class not just as all subset of it.
Don’t think this is a win. It isn’t. It takes time to reprogram the sheep. You will now hear semiautomatic more and more on every news report.
I’m still betting when the Democrats really come after guns their definition of an assault weapon will be any semi-automatic weapon.
This is chapter next of the gun control effort. Now that they’ve taught the ignorant to fear “assault weapons” they will start referring to them in more benign term so that all guns get to share the totally phony bad reputation they’ve created for semi-auto rifles.
There are some 23 million or more modern sporting rifles in common use so far. With proper training for great Americans, such rifles are also a great extra deterrent against nations that might want to invade our country in the future.
Knee jerk reaction maybe, but it would seem the intent must be to group all firearms together thinking it will make the words “gun” or “rifle” themselves inflammatory.
