Russia Resorting to Soviet-Era Anti-Aircraft Missiles to Hit Land Targets
Newsweek ^ | 7/10/2022 | THOMAS KIKA

Russian forces are reportedly relying on Soviet-era munitions for certain tasks as the invasion of Ukraine labors on.

The Russian government has, in recent weeks, increasingly ordered its forces in Ukraine to repurpose outdated anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles for use on land-based targets, according to a Tuesday report from iNews.

In Mykolaiv, a city in Southern Ukraine, six strikes over the last weekend have been attributed to Russian S-300 missiles, anti-aircraft munitions introduced roughly 40 years ago with a range of 75 miles. Two Kh-32 missiles, originally designed to sink aircraft carriers, were also credited with the strike on a Kremenchuk shopping center that killed 20 people last month. A slightly older version of the same missile was also used to strike an Odessa apartment complex last week, killing 18 people.

In order to deploy these obsolete weapons on the modern battlefield, the Russian military has reportedly outfitted them with GPS technology allowing them to roughly target towns and cities.

News of this reliance on repurposed, decades-old weaponry reinforces other recent reports indicating that Russian forces are facing hardware shortages as the Ukraine invasion lasts longer than anticipated. Intelligence reports from the United Kingdom previously revealed that they had become more reliant on so-called "dumb bombs" as their supplies of guided weaponry have dwindled. Unable to be precisely guided, outdated munitions have reportedly resulted in heavier civilian casualties and collateral damage.

Newsweek lies so much that it’s used to it. It used to be a good magazine but now it’s just liberal trash. Most media is these days. Try Duran on u-tube.
The best thing that ever happened to Ukraine is the Russian invasion. It exposes the globalists lies and American ignorance. USA = The Empire of Lies.

They are not getting rid of their old stuff first. They have begun using it recently after four months of using the new stuff.

Would you mind explaining how the anti-aircraft missile equipped with the GPS guidance is “barely accurate to hit the city”?

As a matter of fact, with the appearance of the HIMARS you see the increased indiscriminate terror bombing of the rebel-held population centers.

They are accusing the other side in doing exactly what they are doing, and it is not the first time but a regular practice in this conflict.

“...The best thing that ever happened to Ukraine is the Russian invasion...

Such Bolshevik thinking is sad to see on FreeRepublik. You support an evil genocide. But then again, you also think Newsweek was once a good magazine. It has been far left for at least half a century.

The Ukrainians need support. I give hard-earned money of my own in order to provide extra equipment for Ukraine. They have fought with spirit, and nothing will erase their David vs. Goliath victories in military history. The Russian Army has suffered months of humiliation in Ukraine.

A vast majority of the T-72’s the Russians have lost were modernized ones such as the T-72B2 and B3.

These along with the T-90 (originally called the T-72BU) equipped most of the tank units assigned to the elite 2nd “Taman” Guards Motor Rifle Division.

They’re pulling T-62’s out of storage and sending them to the front.

Russia is scraping the bottom of the barrel in men and material. They sent their best equipment to Ukraine. The wheels fell off and/or sunk to the bottom of the sea. Literally. That is indisputable regardless of the fantasies of our local Putinists.

The EU has stupidly allowed Russia to manage the sanctions and continued to fund the Russian war machine. The Russian economy would have crashed long ago had they not.

“If it works, it works.”

Yep and it would be very interesting to see what kind of weaponry NATO and the US are giving to Ukraine. Is it brand new, top of the line, right out of the factory? Or is it 40-50 year-old inventory of discontinued stock from the cold war era?

The T-72, upgraded or not, is no match for modern antitank weapons.

"Would you mind explaining how the anti-aircraft missile equipped with the GPS guidance is “barely accurate to hit the city”?"

Because surface to air missiles were designed as surface to air missiles, not surface to surface missiles. Russia can not use U.S. GPS since the U.S. cut them out of the system. The Russian GLONASS is not as good as GPS, has as much corruption as everything else in Russia, so it is not as good for weapons targeting.

"As a matter of fact, with the appearance of the HIMARS you see the increased indiscriminate terror bombing of the rebel-held population centers."

Eleven exploding Russian ammo dumps posted to social media say other wise.

"They are accusing the other side in doing exactly what they are doing, and it is not the first time but a regular practice in this conflict."

Except for all the information uploaded online that the pro-invasion faction ignoring. When something blows up in Ukraine, it gets on social media in minutes. Everyone with a cell or IPhone is as good as a WW-II OSS agent now.

Ukraine is using HIMARS to attack Russian ammunition dumps and doing a good job of it. If the reality on the ground in Ukraine does not fit into politically expedient ideologies over here, that's just too bad.

So many falsehoods in one post:)

What makes glonass worse and how exactly the use of GPS was restricted? What are the advantages of HIMARS against ammo dumps compared to their traditional systems like Uragan and Tochka-U, especially given the number of HIMARS?

“The T-72, upgraded or not, is no match for modern antitank weapons.”

Hell the T-72 is no match for the antiquated TOW for that matter.

Even these cope cages they’re welding to the tops of their tanks don’t protect them.
