NPR reports on how opponents of vaccine mandates co-opted 'My Body, My Choice'

It was only a couple of months ago that the congressional Pro-Choice Caucus sent out “messaging materials” with new instructions on how to argue with pro-lifers. First, they recommended replacing “choice” with “decision.” Out: “Safe, legal, and rare”; In: “Safe, legal, and accessible.” And there were no longer “unwanted” pregnancies, only “unexpected” pregnancies. None of these have caught on, and it’s easy to see why.

NPR has a piece out about how “vaccine foes” — nice choice of words there — co-opted “My body, my choice” from the pro-abortion movement. What NPR is actually talking about without saying it is opponents of vaccine mandates, but they just go with “anti-vaccine.”

Anyway, it’s a beautiful thing.

"My Body, My Choice" is no longer polling well with Democrats because of its association with the anti-vax movement

Fascinating read from @RachelHBluth on how vaccine opponents co-opted the abortion rallying cry https://t.co/hPldOf73w0

How is this fascinating? The government wants you fired if you don’t take an experimental vaccine? It’s the perfect slogan.

Rachel Bluth writes:

Celinda Lake, a Democratic strategist and pollster based in Washington, D.C., said “My Body, My Choice” is no longer polling well with Democrats because they associate it with anti-vaccination sentiment.

“What’s really unique about this is that you don’t usually see one side’s base adopting the message of the other side’s base — and succeeding,” she said. “That’s what makes this so fascinating.”

Jodi Hicks, president of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, acknowledged that the appropriation of abortion rights terminology has worked against the reproductive rights movement. “In this moment, to co-opt that messaging and distract from the work that we’re doing, and using it to spread misinformation, is frustrating and it’s disappointing,” Hicks said.

She said the movement was already gravitating away from the phrase. Even where abortion is legal, she said, some women can’t “choose” to get one because of financial or other barriers. The movement is now focusing more heavily on access to health care, using catchphrases such as “Bans Off Our Bodies” and “Say Abortion,” Hicks said.

We’d forgotten about that; back in May, Planned Parenthood explained that the word “choice” ignored the lived realities of black people.

We’re really sorry we stole your slogan:

Using ones words against them to illustrate their hypocrisy isn't "co-opting".

It's illustrating their hypocrisy.

Except abortion doesn't involve a singular body, unlike vaccines.

Don’t you mean anti-mandate? Many got the vaccine but do not support mandating the vaccine.

— Toad (@ToadonaWire) July 6, 2022

And many of us are ok with vaccines as long as they’re safe and proven.

— Christina Pushaw 🐊 🇺🇸 (@ChristinaPushaw) July 6, 2022

That’s why they’re pivoting to “women’s reproductive rights.” Has anyone else notice that?

— JMichael03 (@jma8107) July 6, 2022

Even “abortion care.”

Yea when you get people fired because they won't take an injection they naturally will make that connection. They will also resent you very very deeply. Make of that what you will.

Pro-tip: if your catchphrase bothers you when applied in a different context that makes you a hypocrite.

— Phil (@RealPhillyP) July 6, 2022

This the funniest thing I will see all day.

wow the framing of this article certainly doesn't leave much doubt as to the personal politics of the writer

No, it does not.

Clever idea. Using your sides own hypocrisy to attack your opponents. A variation of the dishonest practice of projection.

Since lefttards live in an ad hoc world it’s a waste of time to expect intellectually consistent thought or expression grounded in logic from them.

Speaking of babies snd vaxxes...

Sudden onset hepatitis in children

Note that whether or not a breastfeeding mom had been CoupFlu vaxxed is never mentioned.

Very interesting omission that...

“Pro-tip: if your catchphrase bothers you when applied in a different context that makes you a hypocrite.”

Indeed, a pro tip. Love it.

Hmmm... need to work the word “rights” in a few more times.

Would be a great billboard on a busy highway in Chicago or New York or LA.

I did a successful co-opting of a pro troop rally during the first Persian Gulf war. We were in Seattle and I was towards the front of the marching crowd, and we came up to one intersection and there were a bunch of late teens in army jackets and stuff. Basically your typical stoners. They were holding up their fingers in a peace sign. So I held mine up in a v like they were only I yelled victory. The whole crowd started chanting it with me and all the kids sheepishly put their hands down.

You know something? I always thought that baby formula shortage was bizarre... but it would make mothers breastfeed their babies more.

Just sayin’

I don't think its co-opting, if "my body, my choice" truly means having a decision over bodily autonomy.

And the retort that not getting the jab effects other people is false, given the FACT that the jab does not prevent a person from contracting Covid and spreading it, but "lessens severity". "My body, my choice" still applies in this case.

But we're dealing with Leftists and/or mentally ill people, and for them, whatever phrase is convenient for the argument of the moment applies, even when it is shown to be hypocritical later.

While the Feminists scream “My body, my choice”, the unborn child silently cries; “it’s my body”.

“Since lefttards live in an ad hoc world it’s a waste of time to expect intellectually consistent thought or expression grounded in logic from them.”

__________

Extremely well put.

Their positions and arguments are like the propped-up panels of a Potemkin Village.

The slightest pressure from a decently organized and presented counterargument and they fall over, flat on the ground.

And then all you get is denial, claiming that the fake wall is still standing. A waste of time to continue interacting with them because they are prepared to deny reality till the cows come home.

“My Body, My Choice” is accurate for deciding whether or not to take a vaccine. This is how it should be.

But “My Body, My Choice” is not accurate in regard to abortion. A fetus is NOT a part of the mother’s body and a DNA test would prove that. It only lives in there until it’s born or killed. (And in almost all cases, the mother CHOSE to put it there.)

They have themselves so tied in knots. But what would one expect? Their entire existence is based on one long emotional tantrum. When one is emotional, one is not rational. And that leads to arguing “x” on a Monday and not “x” on Tuesday depending on the angst.
