NYPD makes fitness tests easier after increased retirements
NY Post ^ | 07/05/2022 | Tina Moore and Bruce Golding

Fat, weak and slow is no way to become a cop — or is it?

The NYPD dramatically relaxed the fitness requirements to become a city cop amid a record wave of retirements that has the brass desperate for warm bodies to fill the ranks, The Post has learned

The department replaced a faux 6-foot wall inside the Police Academy gym with a chain-link fence that’s easier to climb, according to official recruiting videos posted online.

The move came after a cellphone was used last year to record a series of out-of-shape, wannabe cops laughably trying — and failing — to get up and over the wall.

A copy of the compilation video obtained by The Post shows one applicant hanging his head in shame following two futile attempts.

The “Barrier Surmount” is one of six tasks that comprise a physical exam known as the “Job Standard Test” that would-be cops have to pass before beginning six months of training at the academy in Flushing, Queens.

And to boost the passing rate, the 3-minute, 28-second time limit that was in place in 2019 was extended by nearly a full minute — to 4:28 — last year, according to the NYPD recruiting videos posted on YouTube.

And now a wise and very relevant quote from Dean Wormer.
(Just replace “son” with “police cadet”.)

That's nearly some math right there.

I can't find a picture of Hightower knocking down the wall and stepping over it.

Here is the next best thing.

Why should NYPD officers be fit? After all, most of them will be sitting at computers reviewing the social media accounts of those seeking concealed carry permits.

They are vetting rid of competent white male veteran cops...

Replacing with the rainbow diversity quota people...

Idiocracy coming true before our eyes, folks.

An easier way to do this is group the older cops that won’t be in the field into a PFT that is what they would actually face. The US military already does that and has been for 50 years creating a walking, running in place, bicycling, along with sit ups and pushups for some branches and at one time they had the now defunct swimming exercise. And they lowered the standards for women from everything from the annual examination to the academy testing standards.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste and terminating people in their 50’s with 25 years experience for being unable to compete with 25 year olds in a physical test they don’t always need is not real bright as it wastes many years of practice and training. Test them for what they need, not what they used to need.

I know it’s against tradition to read the article, but at least skimming the excerpt - they aren’t talking about lowering standards for the 47 yr old with shot knees, 10yrs since he last walked a beat….they’re lowering the standards for newbies.

Helluva price to pay for being stylish.

I guess it really doesn’t much matter, since even when they do catch an occasional criminal, the criminals are usually back on the street before the cops finish the paperwork.

“I know it’s against tradition to read the article...”

Did read the article. But the article is just the mirror of the problem. Firstly the retirements are not based upon the failure of the PF exam they are trying to display it is, they are consistent with the combination of cops determining it’s time or they are concerned to the point of retirement based upon the lack of support for their safety and job demands. So lowering the standards to new recruits just accomplishes two things: it entices people to go after the job, and it replaces those walking away. But it also reduces the quality of the individual officer as an emergency fill even at the cost of better enforcement. So the quality experienced top cops walk out of disgust for the lack of capacity of their underlings. I’ve seen it in the military with the slow changing of standards from PFE’s to beards and changed uniform standards not for improvement but for cow downing from ear of attitude. And in that business, it is the kiss of death. Plus the transition to pandering will be so slow most will not see it until it bites them on the keyster. You didn’t equate the overall effect of the change but they did a good job hiding it. The reason I saw it is with the same tactic being used in the military and what it has accomplished.
