When Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell voted for the most significant gun violence prevention bill in nearly three decades, he offered a candid explanation for his turnaround after decades of opposing firearm restrictions.
“It’s no secret that we’ve lost ground in suburban areas. We pretty much own rural and small-town America. And I think this is a sensible solution to the problem before us, which is school safety and mental health,” McConnell told reporters. “And yes, I hope it will be viewed favorably by voters in the suburbs that we need to regain in order to hopefully be a majority next year.”
The Kentucky Republican’s goal is to downplay the contentious issues on which suburban voters may be more sympathetic to Democrats — including gun restrictions, abortion rights and former President Donald Trump’s lies that the 2020 election was stolen — to soften the GOP's image with this group of voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Posted something the other day about the possibility of Trump declaring early to offset the negative publicity from the January 6 crap. Declaring early might also put McConnell in his place and would be worth doing for that alone.
Like illegal immigration? Grooming kids? Legalizing drugs? Good luck.
That worked so well for Romney.
This is the traditional way Repubs campaign for office. Soft pedal or strip away every philosophical argument, they are too hard to explain in a sound-bite. Reduce everything to tax cuts. Try to avoid talking about anything that will draw fire from the Democrat press. Hope people will accidentally vote for you.
The party needs new leadership. There’s little motivation to vote because the same old do-nothing people will still be in charge. We need results instead of excuses.
The cultural issues impact everything. Are we a nation? Do our borders matter? Are we free? Soft pedal this stuff and lose it all.
Never underestimate the ability of the Republican party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Well said.
The GOP is basically a one trick pony. The only issue it cares about is taxes.
If the GOP wins the House it will be in spite of itself.
The GOP has given way to the left on cultural and social issues for way too long. Look where it has gotten us. We have men pretending to be women stripping in front of children in our schools and libraries. We have teachers convincing children they are girls instead of boys and vice versa.
It’s way past time to fight back on these issues.
...........Mitch McConnell, the 36 Million Dollar Man.
Yeah, right Mitch, your assessment re suburbs explains why Trump backed candidates are winning 94% of elections around the country.
Get with the program Mitch or Trump will throw you out on your ass in due time.
Have we ever had another issue like it?
McConnell has very little support in the Republican Party.
**************
But he has support in the senate, which is all that matters.
It's a risk. If he declares before the midterms, then the midterms will become a referendum on Trump. If the GOP does well with Trump as the forefront of the election cycle, Trump will be set up pretty comfortably for the nomination.
If the GOP somehow fails to retake Congress and it was determined that Trump was a drag on the ticket, he'll likely be finished in politics and will not be the nominee in '24.
“Soul of the Party.” Ha! IMO, the RINO, GOPe-comfortable-with-second-tier-party has no soul.....
Why? Why do they all go into Congress virtual paupers and come out multi-multi millionaires.
Trump is. But he was one BEFORE he became President.
Don’t make waves. Sure the country will continue its descent but China Mitch will keep his own post & thus his highly profitable family business.
Not in a confrontation with President Trump, it isn’t.
How many in the suburbs?
And while I do not disagree that the Trump endorsement has made a difference in a number races and may well have made the difference, most of Trump endorsements have gone to candidates that would have won anyway.
