The US is watching “very, very closely” for signs of an attack by China on Taiwan, the chief of the US military has said.
“There’s no indications or warnings of anything imminent at this time,” General Mark Milley, the chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, told BBC News. “But again, we watch it very, very closely.”
He said that a decision to attack by Beijing would be a “political” and policy choice, and based on China’s view of the “cost risk-benefit at the time”, as he acknowledged the repeated threats made by president Xi Jinping to reclaim the island by force if necessary.
The statement comes amid increasing anxiety among Taiwanese that China will invade the self-governed island, prompting locals to take gun training.
Last week, Britain’s foreign secretary Liz Truss issued a warning to China at the G7 summit in Madrid saying that any attempt to invade Taiwan would be a “catastrophic miscalculation”.
She said Beijing was in danger of making the same mistake as Russian president Vladimir Putin, as she added: “That is exactly what we saw in the case of Ukraine – a strategic miscalculation by Putin.”

Are we going to give them billions of dollars? It’s working oh SO well for Ukraine.

Too bad we gave all of our spare weapons to Ukraine in a war to protect "the liberal world order". Taiwan could have used them.
We will do nothing because our “leaders” will be in on the deal, just like Ukraine. Because they know we’ll fall for it every time.
And this will distract us from more BILLIONS going to the Ukraine!

What horrible economic hardship in America inflicted on the populous needs to be blamed on Xi. The Xi chip shortage. The Xi battery tax.
China doesn’t need much. Just a little Northern Resource Area to wet their beaks. Biden will give his blessings when the time comes.

Deja vu. Same thing happened with Ukraine. Biden started yanking about it for weeks and then Putin acted. It is almost as if this is some secret signal giving China the OK.
What happened to Russia over the Ukraine invasion. Nothing but sanctions. So China is going to be deterred by sanctions? They already know nothing will happen to them.
Comrade Xi is no fool. He has seen what happened to the vaunted Russian military when it tried to attack an adjacent country over land. He knows that there is no guarantee that his combat inexperienced army of one child soldiers and his locally made untested ships and planes would be successful attacking a determined opponent over 90 miles of open ocean. Failure would not be pleasant for him, his family or his sycophants.
Yet he has also seen how the Russians really can not defend conventionally their underpopulated, rich Far Eastern territories or their Siberian treasure house. China has always coveted these places.
Putin at one point had a notion to join NATO. When this Ukraine war ends and the new strategic realities become apparent for Russia, he may regret not doing so.
What, we have to lose another war?
Is there some time clock for this? Every so ,any decades and we have to take a beating for no good reason?
I wonder if his good friend the Chinese general will warn him in advance the way Milley was going to warn him of US military action.

And now they tell us they’re ‘watching Taiwan’? For what? To give them money? Or weapons or white flags? Or to cringe and bow before them? Or wallow in fear before them in World War III
