Putin wants to become Vladimir the Greater, not turn an exterminated Russia into China’s biggest province. He can come back from losing in Ukraine. He can’t come back from an annihilated Russia.

I think that is a lot of it. If Russia had no nukes I think you’d probably see other countries’ boots on the ground and helmets in the air.
But, Russia having nukes puts the brakes on that.

It took Germany 4 years to end up back at their start line with France in WWI. In WWII, Germany reached the Atlantic after 6 weeks. No one knows what the next conventional war will bring. Better that the start line be as far from Europe’s industrial heart, France and Germany, as possible. Because once Russia owns them, its military potential will finally match its long-held ambitions.

Very good, Vlad HAS hobbled the West, the EU economy ( and ours) is being hammered. Russia is in need of nothing, food, energy, water, grain, commodities, metals,….they have what the west needs. This winter, the EU may find out what a real “Cold War” is.

After Munich, when Hitler lied about his ambitions with the line “This is my last territorial demand in Europe”, he wasn’t doing anything exceptional. Conquerors lie all the time about their outsized ambitions. They’re not recreational liars - they lie to make it more difficult for future targets of those ambitions to unite against them, before it’s too late. Far easier to defeat your enemies one at a time, combine your resources with theirs, and move on to the next target.
