The fear is of a Europe in Russia’s grasp. Pretty much the same issue as in WWII, which is why the US stepped in with Lend Lease, and entered the war directly - to prevent Russia from ending up in Germany’s grasp and, if Russian fortunes improved on their own, to prevent Europe from ending up in Russia’s maw.

It took Germany 4 years to end up back at their start line with France in WWI. In WWII, Germany reached the Atlantic after 6 weeks. No one knows what the next conventional war will bring. Better that the start line be as far from Europe’s industrial heart, France and Germany, as possible. Because once Russia owns them, its military potential will finally match its long-held ambitions.
