Infamous Snake Island—Symbol Of Ukrainian Resistance—Recaptured From Russia
Forbes ^ | 30 June 2022 | Brian Bushard

The Ukrainian Navy announced Thursday it recaptured Snake Island, a critical Black Sea outpost taken by Russia early in the war, which has since galvanized Ukrainian resistance as a symbol of fortified defiance. Russia confirmed its withdrawal Thursday morning, but called the move a “goodwill gesture”...

Natalia Humeniuk, a spokeswoman for the Ukrainian military’s southern command, told the New York Times on Tuesday that it destroyed three anti-aircraft missile systems that Russian had stationed on the island, as well as Russia’s radar station.

HIMARS?

Harpoon missiles are now on hand as well in the Ukraine, and have likely extended the area of denial for Russian warships.

Somebody please tell me again, why are our tax dollars going to blowing up Russian islands?

Not Russian but Ukrainian.

Otherwise I agreed.

Not our monkeys, not our circus.

One commentator at the link you provided joked that Snake island coordinates were probably saved as favorites by Ukrainian artillerymen.

Now that Snake Island is within range of the new systems provided to the Ukraine, it would be suicidal to try to base any more Russians there.

Agree. Eisenhower was correct that we should leave NATO and have all US military out of Europe in ten years. We have been the world’s policeman too long.

Agree also. Europe is long past recovering from WW2.

We have been financing both their security and welfare state.

Time to go.

We are on the eve of a possible Russian and Chinese world war and we are the primary targets. Not Ukraine. Not anybody else. All Chinese and Russkie nukes are aimed at us, nobody else, and that has always been true.

And it’s not because we’re eeevil imperialists. It’s not because somebody wanted Ukraine to be in NATO. It’s not because of any bullshit any of these countries say: it’s because these are terrorist regimes and we—even with all our faults—are the one thing standing in the way of Russian and Chinese world hegemony.

Leaving NATO doesn’t help the US. It hurts us because it means France and the UK would have no reason to fire retaliatory nuclear strikes against Russia and China if we were the victim of a surprise first strike.

It hurts us because it means we would have no forces whatsoever in Europe with which to retaliate against Russian and Chinese aggression.

We’d be alone and isolated. Which is why the shutting down of NATO has been a long term strategy of international communism for decades, even till today.

End NATO. It is no longer serving any useful function.

Rationally explain that by responding to my points, other than by saying “Russia and China are not threats to us,” which is the highest BS possible.

The Chinese are an economic threat (merchantilism) as well as a military threat. All of you right wingers that are pro off shoring and anti protectionism (anti import tariffs) are hypocrites in every way. If you are not like that than apologies.

Obviously not. I was one of the first people on this forum attacking “free trade” and defending the tariffs before it was cool.

All western nations must stop doing business with China and bring it back home.

Not in this case. Ukraine built SPGs where the weapon of choice:
Wheeled, self-propelled 2S22 Bohdana 155 howitzer, 52 caliber, max range 42km, compatible with standard NATO ammunition ... Bogdana demonstrated a range of 40 km with ERFB-BV extended range shells with improved aerodynamics. It also demonstrated a range of 42 km with rocket-assisted shell. Range with a standard HE-FRAG shell could be around 30 km. So this Ukrainian artillery system outperforms the older Soviet howitzers and is on par with modern Western howitzers

We also shouldn’t underestimate Russian and Chinese military power like a lot of the anti Russia/ anti China folk here do. We do so at our peril.

Not a Russian Island, and it’s recapture only means that Putin no longer expects to mount seaborne invasions. Not that big a deal.
