I respectfully disagree. NATO was created in 1949 because the USSR was gobbling up Eastern European countries and forcing them into the Soviet sphere under Soviet domination, ala the “Iron Curtain.”

A lot of people think the creation of NATO was the reason the Soviets began taking over the Eastern European countries. However, the Soviet “Iron Curtain” began months before Nazi Germany’s final surrender in May, 1945; for instance, Romania surrendered to the USSR in August, 1944 and was wholly and uncontrollably occupied by the USSR and was absorbed into the Soviet orbit.

Today Russia is back to aggressively pursuing its territorial ambitions, and has been doing so for at least twenty years.
