YOU'RE THE ONE

Les tells the story proudly now, with an ending that few would have ever predicted when he was in high school. He remembers the turning point as though it were yesterday. Just a chance encounter and an offhand comment... but it changed his life forever.

He had slipped quietly into the back of a classroom to wait for a friend that day. The last thing he wanted was to be noticed, but the teacher asked him to go to the board and work out a problem. Les pointed out that he wasn't a student in that class. "It doesn't matter," said Mr Washington, the teacher. "Go do it anyway." Les protested that he couldn't. Somewhat embarrassed, he added, "Because I'm 'Educable Mentally Retarded'."

At that point, the teacher came out from behind his desk, looked at the embarrassed teenager and challenged him, "Don't ever say that again. Someone's opinion of you does not have to become your reality".

The students laughed, of course, but Les didn't really mind so much. In a way, it was as though the teacher's comment had set him free. Someone had looked at him and seen possibilities. Les had never dared hope for that before. Perhaps he COULD move beyond the limits others had placed on him. Today, Les explains his awakening with the words of Goethe: "Look at a man the way that he is, he only becomes worse. But look at him as if he were what he could be, and then he becomes what he should be". That's how Mr. Washington became Les's mentor, and a constant source of inspiration.

While still a junior, Les heard something Mr. Washington told some graduating seniors. "You have greatness within you. If just one of you can get a glimpse of a larger vision of yourself, of who you really are, the world will never be the same again. You can touch millions of people's lives."

The amazing thing is that Les Brown did indeed go on to realize his dream. He has since produced a number of specials that have been shown on public television. As his old mentor had once predicted, once he found that "larger glimpse of himself," Les was able to "touch the lives of millions".

Even if we're "successful," I suspect most of us never catch that vision, never understand how special we are. Not really. We're too busy trying to be someone else. After all, we are constantly bombarded by powerful messages telling us what attributes society finds most desirable. And we respond by trying to make ourselves over in that image. For many, it's not even a matter of being the best looking, the brightest, or the most admired. It's a quest just to be "normal." Even big egos can be a way of hiding a sense of inadequacy, or a cry for attention.

The Bible's message is quite different. It reminds us that each person is created in God's image, with unique gifts and potential. No one else can make our contribution...or take advantage of our opportunities...or affect the world in just our way. Who knows the difference YOU might make if you were to discover that larger vision?f mind.

May you discover that vision.

CAPT J. David Atwater, CHC, USN

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine
feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...and a Blessed Lord’s Day and Shavua Tov to you and yours.

Did you and Tippy have a terrific hike in the new area you found?

We are covered in drifting smoke from fires all over. The one in town, just a couple miles south of me, is now contained and mop up continues, with no evacuations. The most smoke is coming from fires western Alaska.

We went in about a quarter mile, because I wasn’t prepared for hiking (no water, walking stick, or insect repellent) but now i know where it is. I am eager to scope out more of it tomorrow.

It wasn’t there five years ago when i ventured down the path with Penny(RIP). I’m really happy to see the new, marked trail, and from aerial maps, it seems to go all the way to my favorite hiking place around the pond a mile and a half away.

Good evening, radu, and a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours.

Were you busy at the museum today? Flip flops still comfortable?

Lots of smoke earlier today seems to be clearing off some and the sun is shining thru. And momma2 came back with 7 little, little ones. I need to get a picture uploaded.

Walking with Others

Bible in a Year:

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.

Romans 13:8

Billy, a loving and loyal dog, became an internet star in 2020. His owner, Russell, had broken his ankle and was using crutches to walk. Soon the dog also began to hobble when walking with his owner. Concerned, Russell took Billy to the vet, who said there was nothing wrong with him! He ran freely when he was by himself. It turned out that the dog faked a limp when he walked with his owner. That’s what you call trying to truly identify with someone’s pain!

Coming alongside others is forefront in the apostle Paul’s instructions to the church in Rome. He summed up the last five of the Ten Commandments in this way: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Romans 13:9). We can see the importance of walking with others in verse 8 as well: “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.”

Author Jenny Albers advises: “When someone is broken, don’t try to fix them. (You can’t.) When someone is hurting, don’t attempt to take away their pain. (You can’t.) Instead, love them by walking beside them in the hurt. (You can.) Because sometimes what people need is simply to know they aren’t alone.”

Because Jesus, our Savior, walks alongside us through all our hurt and pain, we know what it means to walk with others.

Reflect & Pray

Who needs you to come alongside them this week? In what way might God want you to do that?

Open my eyes, God, to the needs of people around me. Help me to be a loving friend.

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

Hey there, Kathy.

You aren't kidding about the smoke being thick there. It was UGLY when I checked Lake Hood when I got home this afternoon. Just peeked again and yes, the smoke's slowly starting to dissipate. I can see a little of the Chugach Mountains now. But the smoke's still thick in the opposite direction. Still no Mt. Susitna. Maybe it'll start to reappear before sunset.

Glad Momma2 was back with her wee ones. They are so cute when they're that tiny.
Is Momma1 not showing up any more? I hope she and her brood are ok.

It was pretty slow today at the museum. Hot but not so hot people couldn't enjoy spending time at the lakes, and that's probably where they were. Last weekend was too hot to spend time outside at all, even at a lake.

But we had some excitement yesterday and today. Two new beauties arrived, on loan, to be on display. This one arrived yesterday morning .....

..... and this one arrived this morning.

We're all so excited to have these beautiful cannons on display at the museum. They're stunning.

Hey there, radu!

Those cannons are awesome! Glad you had your camera handy to take a couple of pictures. I hope you had some stuff to do to keep from getting too bored since it was slow at the museum

We’ve been having a good time with our kids and the grandgirls. Not doing much...it’s waaaaaay too hot to do much. Hotter here than in Odessa if you can believe that!

No insect repellent? That won’t do. LOL! They could carry you away.

Hope it pans out the way you want.
