'Mitt Romney Republican' is now a potent GOP primary attack

Mitt Romney isn't up for reelection this year. But Trump-aligned Republicans hostile toward the Utah senator have made his name a recurring theme in this year's primaries, using him as a foil and derisively branding their rivals “Mitt Romney Republicans."

Republicans have used the concept to frame their primary opponents as enemies of the Trump-era GOP in southeast Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The anti-tax group Club For Growth, among the most active super PACs in this year's primaries, used “Mitt Romney Republican” as the central premise of an attack ad in North Carolina's Senate primary.

But nowhere are references to Romney Republicanism as common as they are in Utah. Despite his popularity with many residents here, candidates are repeatedly deploying “Mitt Romney Republican” as a campaign trail attack in the lead-up to Tuesday’s Republican primary.

“There are two different wings in the Republican Party,” Chris Herrod, a former state lawmaker running in suburban Utah’s 3rd Congressional District, said in a debate last month.

“If you’re more aligned with Mitt Romney and Spencer Cox,” he added, referring to Utah’s governor, “then I’m probably not your guy.”

The fact that his brand has become potent attack fodder reflect how singular Romney's position is in U.S. politics: He's the only senator with the nationwide name recognition that comes from being a presidential nominee and the only Republican who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump twice.

I would rather be stabbed in the chest by a Charlie Baker who we know is ideologically aligned with the Left, than be stabbed in the back by a scumbag like Cornyn.

People must be pissed about him down there.

This makes sense, as not a lot of people remember Nelson Rockefeller, and not enough know Christine Todd Whitman or Lowell P. Weicker, and keeping track of the Bushes is complicated.

Nobody remembers Rockefeller?
I was there when, as a new Governor, he was booed publicly at the NY Coliseum.

Being called a Rockefeller Republican was far from an endearment.

Romney is the #1 recipient of NRA money, and it isn’t even close at all.
He got around $13 million dollars.
The NRA is a coopted organization it seems

I want to know the NRA excuse, to keep him on the reservation? It is not like Utah is going to elect a Gabby Giffords or Sarah Brady-type to the U.S. Senate.

for some reason the GOP decided he was the man to take the presidency by storm.

Maybe because they were so impressed by fellow Massachusettsians Mike Dukakis and John F. Kerry in their campaigns.

Anybody can run as a “Republican”. Romney is not a Republican. He’s a “Republican” on paper.

I remember Rockefeller (not personally. I’m only 47. But historically).

Yes he was a liberal Republican. The polar opposite of Goldwater and Reagan. And idiot Ford made him vice president.

GMTA

....and don’t forget the front page (NY Daily News?) picture of Nelson’s body on the stretcher with his shoes on the wrong feet. THAT’S something that has disappeared in a very Stalinesque manner.

Picking Rockefeller for VP kept him (Rocky) from taking pot shots at Ford from the sidelines. Remember, the GOP was a hot mess after Watergate. What with Nixon’s abdication, the way the war in VN was concluded and the recession, Ford had enough on his plate.

Perhaps the fact that I’ve got thirty years on you allows me a different perspective.

Expose his corruption and force him to resign. He’s corrupt to the core and his dirt has to be everywhere including Ukraine.

for some reason the GOP decided he was the man to take the presidency by storm.
The reason was Romneycare. Later to become Obamacare the law of the land.

The Republicans wanted their name on it.
