After the Uvalde City Council voted against a leave of absence for embattled school district police chief Pete Arredondo on Tuesday evening, Mayor Don McLaughlin harshly criticized Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw for blaming local police in last month's shooting at Robb Elementary School.
It came hours after McCraw told a special committee in the Texas senate that there was "a sufficient number of armed officers wearing body armor to isolate, distract, and neutralize the subject" within three minutes of the shooting, but Arredondo "decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children."
McLaughlin told Uvalde residents on Tuesday evening that since the shooting, McCraw has continued to "lie, leak, mislead, or misstate information in order to distance his own troopers and rangers from the response."
"There were no less than eight law enforcement agencies present in the hallway leading up to the breach of the door at Robb Elementary School," McLaughlin said at a city council meeting.
"Every briefing, he leaves out the number of his own officers and rangers that were on scene that day. He leaves out that during this time, every other classroom in the building was safely evacuated by Uvalde peace officers with the assistance of Border Patrol."

Uvalde residents ripped into Arredondo at Tuesday's city council meeting.
"Get him out of our faces. He does not deserve leave without pay," one woman yelled. "He failed us."
McLaughlin also confirmed Tuesday that Robb Elementary School will be demolished, saying "you could never ask a child to go back or a teacher to go back in that school, ever."
Texas DPS did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday evening about the mayor's comments.

It would be karma.
Pete Arredondo stupid cowardly behavior shows what being vaxxxx and boosters impaired means. His brain is half rotted away. So of course he crumbled in this crisis.
When you see inexplicable behavior, start thinking how vaxxed up this person is.
A point that is constantly made to me by central Texans is the incredible level of nepotism and corruption in public office in these counties and towns.
Arredondo never went to a police academy, was never a patrol cop. He went from 911 operator to town bureaucrat to town council to chief of the Uvalde school cops.
Pure nepotism, cronyism, and corruption.
Qualifications, skill, talent, knowledge had NOTHING to do with Arredondo being installed as police chief of schools.
Shouldn’t this all be resolved BEFORE Federal Congressional rights confiscation?
When will people stop backing the blue and recognize police forces are hopelessly politicized and are the ememy?
Not sure on that, but a lot of schools have large exterior windows made of shatter resistant glass, the kind with embedded mesh. I don’t know if this school had that... it certainly didn’t next to the external doors.
Also, as noted in the hearing, the police chief did think about doing that... over an hour after the shooter entered the classrooms.
Small town police forces had leadership and officers like that guy pre-pandemic. Can’t say it was a vaccine for those people.
If he’s smart, he won’t show up at work... but somewhere, oh, 600-800 meters away, maybe? Right around shift change?
The only jobs in those towns are fast food ones and government jobs ...... Federal, state and county. Schools are always a big tit to suck off of So the local school system set up its own police force. With imbecile Pete Arredondo heading it up. He had one job to do and he booted it 100%
Of course a town like Uvalde is super incestuous when it comes to who gets doled out a gubbermint job. My guess is Uvalde is a huge drain on the state of Texas finances.
State investigator said two doors were unlocked, the one the shooter went through and the one the police went through. He also pointed out that the class room doors can only be locked from the outside.
I watched the entire Donut Operator video, thanks.
That “police chief” (LOL) needed to be relieved of command in the first ten minutes.
Amen.
Ten minutes? Ten seconds. He should have been leading the immediate charge of the officers with him into the classroom - the rifle shots were giving the location away.
Correct, I posted about that.
That school was a ridiculously soft target.
Also, did you like the part where the school resource officer drove over the field to accost a teacher, in the process driving right past the guy with a long rifle?
Coincidence?
Robert Holmes (Father of James Holmes “Dark Knight” Shooter) was set to testify in front of the US Senate regarding the Libor Scandal.
Peter Lanza (Father of Adam Lanza “Sandy Hook” Shooter) was set to testify in front of the US Senate regarding the Libor Scandal.
Two fathers of two shooters, testifying in the same scandal, and living thousands of miles apart. Hmm?
That’s not why schools set up police forces, actually. The major reason they set up their own police forces is so they can have police that don’t answer to the local politicians and people, so they can cover up/’handle’ embarrassing incidents that would otherwise be taken care of by the regular local police and end up with charges being filed by the DA.
Oh, and incidentally maybe sort of protect the kids.
Yes, I’m a bit cynical. That said, the school resource officers I had in school (80s-90s Los Angeles) were absolutely willing to be a bullet sponge to protect the kids and really did do their jobs accordingly.
They’re going to tear it down because Biden suggested it.
I would point out that that is common in small towns everywhere I’ve been in the US. I really don’t understand why a lot of people here on FR idolize small towns as, having lived in several, I found that their governments are full of incompetence, bias and corruption.
I agree, ten seconds, but to replace an on-scene “commander” (sic) will not happen immediately.
In retrospect, it would have been better for the closest cop to just shoot Arredodo.
