After the Uvalde City Council voted against a leave of absence for embattled school district police chief Pete Arredondo on Tuesday evening, Mayor Don McLaughlin harshly criticized Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw for blaming local police in last month's shooting at Robb Elementary School.
It came hours after McCraw told a special committee in the Texas senate that there was "a sufficient number of armed officers wearing body armor to isolate, distract, and neutralize the subject" within three minutes of the shooting, but Arredondo "decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children."
McLaughlin told Uvalde residents on Tuesday evening that since the shooting, McCraw has continued to "lie, leak, mislead, or misstate information in order to distance his own troopers and rangers from the response."
"There were no less than eight law enforcement agencies present in the hallway leading up to the breach of the door at Robb Elementary School," McLaughlin said at a city council meeting.
"Every briefing, he leaves out the number of his own officers and rangers that were on scene that day. He leaves out that during this time, every other classroom in the building was safely evacuated by Uvalde peace officers with the assistance of Border Patrol."

Uvalde residents ripped into Arredondo at Tuesday's city council meeting.
"Get him out of our faces. He does not deserve leave without pay," one woman yelled. "He failed us."
McLaughlin also confirmed Tuesday that Robb Elementary School will be demolished, saying "you could never ask a child to go back or a teacher to go back in that school, ever."
Texas DPS did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday evening about the mayor's comments.

With all due respect to the Mayor, his LEO’s having jurisdiction, had command of that scene. There’s no backing out of that, the local authorities own that.

Uvalde Mayor McLaughlin accused the DPS of continuing to ‘lie, leak, mislead, or misstate information’ about the shooting at Robb Elementary School
Mr. Mayor McLaughlin needs to be specific about the “lie, leak, mislead, or misstate information” and it will likely lead back to Mr. Mayor and his “Chief of Police” who made just about all of the decisions.

The mayor is in full CYA mode.

‘He leaves out that during this time, every other classroom in the building was safely evacuated by Uvalde peace officers with the assistance of Border Patrol’
The police did a great job saving the ones who were in far less danger.
Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin says DPS head Steve McCraw continues to “lie, leak, or misstate information.”
He says McCraw has an agenda to protect his own troopers.
“The gloves are off,” McLaughlin said.— Matt Houston (@MattCHouston) June 22, 2022
It wasn’t the building’s fault, so why punish the taxpayers by teating it down? Sends students a message that buildings are to be blamed rather than our politicians.
Uvalde mayor Don McLaughlin says he hasn’t been briefed once on the status of the shooting investigation and isn’t getting any info from DPS or Gov. Abbott’s office, adding:

Typical small town incestuous political relationships and CYA.
I trust DPS a lot more than I do anyone from Uvalde government. Especially when Uvalde just tells us to believe them and DPS shows up with transcripts, security camera footage and actual physical evidence.
The local PoPo did a crappy job of taking out the perp.
Were I a grandpa on location, I’d have taken on the body armor and firearms of the weaklings and gone in.
I’m not trained, nor brave, but would have just not stood around.
Poorly written and confusing article.
On the one hand, is this guy McCraw saying that police were equipped and ready to act but the Police Chief told them to stand down?
Sounds like the mayor is calling BS on all this, ie that the officers did NOT make any attempt to enter the room.
The mayor seems to be on the side saying the police at all levels failed to act.
He’s going to be a person of interest in the investigation. Why should they tell him what they’ve found?
Also, Arredondo works for his school district. Shouldn’t Arredondo have briefed him in?
Pictured from left to right: Uvalde Police, Arredondo and his officers, DPS, the Mayor, and the Governor. Nobody knows anything. Everybody in CYA mode.
Because that's what taxpayers are FOR, silly.
McGraw is the director of the Texas Department Of Public Safety (state cops). He not only is saying that the UCISD PD chief told them to stand down, he’s got bodycam footage, security camera footage and the remaining dispatch comms to prove that’s exactly what he did.
To be specific - about an HOUR after the shooter entered through an unlocked door and started shooting kids, they were still hearing shots... and a bodycam caught Chief Arredondo saying regarding an arriving SWAT team (one of several), “Tell them to f**king wait, no one comes in.”
McGraw has Uvalde law enforcement and government dead to rights.

One of the Uvalde cops tried that, per today’s hearing. His wife was shot and bleeding out. The other Uvalde cops detained him at gunpoint, confiscated his firearm and ejected him from the premises.
His wife died.
He should have shot them...
Just sayin’
Ok, then the mayor then is full of crap?
Problem here is, that it looks like the police lied saying they tried to get in, but the doors were locked. Video shows that the police NEVER tried to open the doors, which apparently were NOT locked.
Sounds like the police chief told the officers to stand down, but none of the officers took any initiative.
Still confusing.
The cost of the new school should come out of the coward cops’s pensions.
They would have shot him and likely lied about it. At that point the other cops also had 5.56 rifles... ‘Damn shame about that ricochet.’
The mayor is indeed full of crap, trying to bluff his way through by being noisy or both.
Apparently pretty much everything that Uvalde PD/CISD PD released as information has turned out to be lies or half truths. The cops were told to stand down, some wanted to go in, but the police chief told them forcefully not to.
Watch this video to see just how many lies and screwups that DPS has found so far - I linked it on another thread, but it’s germane here too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwqfRpU_91A
I’m not trained, nor Brave but as an old guy I’d go down very willingly.
Hopefully taking others with me.
