Protest on the runway: Southwest Airlines pilots line up in anger at poor staffing and long hours as airport chaos continues across the nation with 200 flight canceled today after 14,000 over the weekend

Nearly 1,300 Southwest Airline pilots gathered outside the Dallas Love Field airport on Tuesday to protest ongoing staff shortages as travel chaos continued on the first official day of summer - with more than 200 flights across the United States canceled.

The Southwest Pilots Association called for better treatment of its pilots at the protest, which it called 'the largest display of unity in Southwest Airlines history.'

It described the demonstration in Dallas, Texas an 'informational picket' in an effort to raise awareness of pilot fatigue, stress caused by ongoing pilot shortages - which it says is to blame for massive delays and cancelations.

'Our pilots have had to address the fatigue issue with management publicly, which is something that we never want to do, but you know, have been tired and have been trying to do everything they can,' Capt. Casey Murray, president of the Southwest Pilots Association told NBC DFW.

He said the main problem is issues with scheduling pilots on connecting flights.

'We've seen our company not really address a lot of operational problems,' Murray said. 'And this has been going on for several years.

'While we do need to hire pilots, the main problem really is the efficiency in the scheduling efficiencies we've seen.'

In April, Southwest Airlines announced that it was cutting nearly 20,000 flights from its summer schedule, including about a quarter of flights from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Destin-Fort Walton Beach in Florida.

The airline had 2,200 fewer employees than there were three years earlier - even though the company had hired an additional 5,000 workers in 2021, according to the Dallas Morning News.

And of those who were working, a large number of pilots are canceling their shifts due to fatigue, and blaming it on erratic schedules from delays and cancelations.

These professionals have been subjected to TSA pat downs and masks ups...glad to see them saying enough is enough.

The airline had 2,200 fewer employees than there were three years earlier...

How very strange. Some sort of odd cardiac condition infecting the workforce? Maybe a Great Resignation due to forced medical experiments?

It's mystifying.

RE: it’s mystifying.

Indeed. Here’s the question : Why is that problem suddenly surfacing now? Are they telling us that there were enough trained pilots before 2022 and then these trained pilots suddenly retired?

The FAA dramatically increased the ammount of flight hours needed to be licensed, to the point that people cannot afford to do it. So very few new pilots coming in, boomers retiring. Basically government created a pilot shortage, as I understand it.

Yeah, forced jabs causing people to walk away didn’t help.

Idiocracy - since 2008.

A brief interlude that was constantly sabotaged from all sides

When Southwest employees publicly display unhappiness, it is a big deal.

None of the people making this happen fly on commercial airlines.

I haven’t flown since 1998 and if I never fly again it will not be any time too soon.

Exactly right!…what is it to them!
We suffer……they fly wherever they want on their private jets.
Part of the deliberate take down of our nation.

gee, why the sudden massive shortage of workers - especially pilots - throughout the airline industry. I wonder if it could have something to do with the Biden administration trying to force the Fauci Juice on them and requiring the airlines to fire anybody who wouldn’t agree to just roll over and take it.

I used to only fly on Southwest. They used to be friendly and fun. Covid ruined so many things. Well, actually government’s response to covid ruined so many things.

Best part...lockdowns, masks, and vaccines are useless.
