LONDON (Reuters) -Russia warned NATO member Lithuania on Monday that unless the transit of goods to Russia's Kaliningrad exclave on the Baltic Sea was swiftly restored then Moscow would take undisclosed measures to defend its national interests.
With east-west relations at a half-century low over Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, Vilnius banned the transit of goods sanctioned by the European Union through Lithuanian territory to and from the exclave, citing EU sanction rules.
Russia's foreign ministry summoned Lithuania's top envoy in Moscow to deliver a protest while the Kremlin said the situation was beyond serious.
"The situation is more than serious," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "This decision is really unprecedented. It's a violation of everything."
Russia's foreign ministry demanded Vilnius reverse what it cast as an "openly hostile" move immediately.
"If cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the Russian Federation via Lithuania is not fully restored in the near future, then Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests," it said.

Welcome to July 1914.
Isn’t it interesting how none of these articles and journalists ever mention that this blockade is a blatant treaty violation, a treaty that Lithuania signed and ratified by its entire government?

Putin having a bad last couple days.
1. Mistress refuses to have an abortion
2. Dissed by Kazakstan
3. Dissed by Lithuania
4. Had his stolen Black Sea gas platforms blown up last night
5. Had all his new fortifications on Snake Island blown up last night
6. Still can’t take Luhansk
So how will he respond? By sending his Black Sea fleet to their doom off Odessa?
And you got tons of dumb FReepers accepting the Putin-is-evil narrative and willingly go along with this.
See post #5 as a prime example
Watch and see, grasshopper.
I have lost track of which countries Russia has threatened?
Ukraine because of Nazis
Poland for supporting Ukraine and providing weapons
Russia threatens to cut off oil and LNG to Germany
Finland and Sweden for joining NATO
Kazakhstan for not recoginzing parts of Ukraine as Russian
Lithuania over Kalingrad transit
Who is the target after Ukraine?
“And you got tons of dumb FReepers accepting the Putin-is-evil narrative “
Excuse me, But, Putin really is evil.
We’d better listen
“See post #5 as a prime example”
How is post number 5 a prime example? I see facts backing up Putin is having a bad day.
I find the treaty very interesting.
“However, either Contracting Party may at any time terminate this Agreement after giving at least six months’ written notice through the diplomatic channel.”
Under Article 24 in the treaty Lithuania has the right to terminate with a six-month notice. If I were Lithuania, I would let the goods flow, then send an official termination notice via diplomatic channels.
The real enemy is NATO and D.C., not Moscow.
Does Russia honor treaties? Only when they feel like it. Having said that, I’m not in favor of NATO getting involved in this fight. The time for a strong deterrence effort against Russian aggression was BEFORE they invaded Ukraine.
As opposed by Putin, who prefers the old fashioned methods of control like a trip to Siberia or bullet through the head.
All we've seen so far is a lot of flopping around by a Third World dump pretending to be a super power.
“Isn’t it interesting how none of these articles and journalists ever mention that this blockade is a blatant treaty violation, a treaty that Lithuania signed and ratified by its entire government?”
Actually, Article 11 says even more than that, but since Russia has violated treaty agreements with Ukraine (i.e. occupying Crimea 8 years ago already) can anyone say much about it and not be a hypocrite?
breaking treaties is never good
Unfortunately the Russians will continue to grind out advances as long as the rail lines to and into Ukraine remain. This has been Ukraine’s biggest mistake. We could have collapsed the Germans quickly in WWII had we destroyed their electrical grid and trains.
doesn’t sound very smart to poke the bear.
I don’t see anything good from this
