The U.S. Navy has awarded a $536 million contract to a Marinette shipyard for a third Constellation-class frigate tied to a $5.5 billion shipbuilding program.
Fincantieri Marinette Marine will design and build the 7,300-ton frigate that’s expected to be a key part of the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare and one of 10 frigates built in Marinette. The work will support thousands of jobs at the shipyard for many years to come.
The Navy also says it could transfer decommissioned littoral combat ships built in Marinette to other countries.
Ultimately, it’s up to Congress to decide whether the ships are pulled from active service. Still, last fall, USS Freedom, a $537 million littoral combat ship commissioned in Milwaukee in 2008, was sent to the mothball fleet well ahead of its expected 25-year lifespan.

My First DDG was 4,500 tons.
Good Riddance to the LCS delusion.
We need 50 of these, not 20.
Marinette also makes a bunch of other vessels...

Interesting that a Great Lakes yard builds ocean vessels....
“We need 50 of these, not 20.”
Probably even 100, especially now that the Neocons are trying to start a war with China.
Sturgeon Bay will also benefit, as their shipyard is also owned by Fincanteri and does some of Marinette’s fabrication work.
The Sturgeon Bay facility can also build these vessals completely if necessary.
The St. Lawrence Seaway (French: la Voie Maritime du Saint-Laurent) is a system of locks, canals, and channels in Canada and the United States that permits oceangoing vessels to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes of North America, as far inland as Duluth, Minnesota, at the western end of Lake Superior.

And these will face off against Russia and China.
Russia is building its own carriers, similar to the new Chinese design. Nuclear powered to boot.
Obsolete days after being commissioned? NOT my Navy. My first ship was about 1,900 tons. 😊
In this modern technological era, all naval surface combatants are obsolete floating coffins for their brave young crews.
Fletchers were 2,500 tons fully loaded so I guess that’s just progress. The Zumwalts are just an aberation.

Building them without high end chips, to the specs of the lowest bidder with the largest bribe.
As a Wisconsin resident, I’m glad this Navy shipbuilding contract went to our state. I am dismayed that most US ship builds end up over contract, extensions due to problems and thus we can’t afford a bigger combat fleet. The needs and designs have to be looked at with a view to costing less yet still be battle ready. Build Chevrolets not Cadillacs.
The differences in having a carrier and using it effectively are huge. It takes the PLA Navy hours to get their stuff airborne, much less back on deck.
All of the shiny new toys with zero combat experience.
“especially now that the Neocons are trying to start a war with China.”
Oh and bullying Lithuania to pull the crap that they just did with Russia and its rail agreement. How genius! The war with Russia will probably precede the one with China. US vs Russia and China, that will go well with are current military politically correct military.
The LCS was - is - a financial disaster and a ship without a mission. Not to mention serious design issues.
We could of had 40 except we had to send 40b to Ukraine for...reasons.
Building a new one so they can retire it in a couple of years.
“US vs Russia and China, that will go well with are current military politically correct military.”
Not to mention a US military which is a shell of itself and literally was ASLEEP for 35 years thinking that the only wars it would have to fight would be against goat herders.
If the Neocons REALLY want to start a war with China, it would have been helpful to build up our navy to at least 1000 ships, rather than shrinking it to less than 300 ships (and dropping).
BIW, Bath Iron Works builds ships for the navy; on-time or before the due date and under the bidded costs.
GO BIW!!
We can build more once the first ones are completed and tested.
