Mark Shields, the longtime PBS News commentator known for his weekly political analysis, has died Saturday morning at the age of 85, PBS NewsHour confirmed.
Shields died of kidney failure at his home in Chevy Chase, Md., NewsHour spokesman Nick Massella told NPR.
Before he retired in 2020, Shields provided thoughtful insights into the administrations of six U.S. presidents, on the Persian Gulf War, the Iran-Contra affair and 9/11. His tenure lasted for 33 years.
Shields was known for both his sense of humor and his expansive knowledge of American politics, Judy Woodruff, the anchor and managing editor of NewsHour said in a tweet announcing his death.

Decent man from a different generation when people could disagree on politics without being complete asses.
Sad to see. Hard for me to grasp a guy so blinded to the truth.
Happened to Lucifer before this world was formed.

Yep. Shields was also a Marine Corps vet. You won’t find many of them among today’s leftists.
Mark “Maxi” Shields as Rush called him
I used to try to catch his segment on PBS (the only thing during the week I had any interest in watching on PBS) back when he was paired with David Gergen or Paul Gigot. When David Brooks took over as the supposed Republican point of view I stopped watching. Shields was there to tout the Democrats' talking points and all Brooks ever seemed to say was that the Republicans were screwing it up again.
I recall Mark Shields once mentioning that the University of Notre Dame campus is very beautiful. He was right about that.
Wasn’t he liberal on everything?
RIP, Mark "Maxi" Shields.
How true. I am old enough to remember how politics was handled before the internet and social media. This were so much more civil.
Yeah I remember him with Gergen back when such shows were at least watchable. I haven’t watched such shows in probably 20 years or so as the left has veered hard left.
Concur. LOL, David “Rodham” Gergen.
RIP!
First, Bob “Heckle and” Beckel and now this...
Can Al Hunt be far behind? Or Serpent Head?
Agree
A likeable old-school liberal
Brookes can fill in for him
I liked Mark Maxi Shields .....he was easily BEATEN UP WITH THE TRUTH!
Wapo will be broadcasting a live interview on July 5th.
I watched him for years. He was a die hard liberal who silently hated America and Americans. He dreamed of the day when the Left would control everything. He got his dying wish.
