'This is a dreadful mistake' - Head of UK's armed forces says Russia has 'strategically lost'

Russia has "strategically lost" the war in Ukraine and is a "more diminished power", the head of the UK's armed forces has said.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said Vladimir Putin had lost 25% of Russia's land power for only "tiny" gains.

And while Russia may achieve "tactical successes" in the coming weeks, he said any notion the war had been a success was "nonsense".

Admiral Radakin, who is the UK's chief of defence staff, said Russia was running out of troops and advanced missiles and would never be able to take over all of Ukraine.

-snip-

Admiral Radakin said: "This is a dreadful mistake by Russia. Russia will never take control of Ukraine.

"Russia has strategically lost already. NATO is stronger, Finland and Sweden are looking to join."

He said Moscow had been forced to give up its objectives of taking over most Ukrainian cities and was now engaged in a tactical battle where fighting is "tough".

Admiral Radakin said: "The Russian machine is grinding away, and it's gaining a couple of - two, three, five - kilometres every day.

"And that's tough for Ukraine, but this is going to be a long fight. And we're supporting Ukraine, Ukraine has shown how courageous it really is.

"And Russia has vulnerabilities because it's running out of people, it's running out of hi-tech missiles."

He continued: "President Putin has used about 25% of his army's power to gain a tiny amount of territory and 50,000 people either dead or injured."

Russia is now a "more diminished power" diplomatically and economically than several months ago, he said.

"Any notion that this is a success for Russia is nonsense. Russia is failing.

The damage Russia has done to the structures in Ukraine has made a real mess for any territory they take over. Imagine the cost of removing the demolished buildings and rubble. Imagine pushing all of this material away just rebuild the city:

The lone voice in the west still trying to convince your lying eyes Russia isn’t doing what they set out to do, e.g., stop the shelling of two breakaway areas of the Ukraine by the Ukraine and make it Russian held/friendly terroritory. Russia never set out to take over most Ukrainian cities; the towards Kiev was a gamble but it also served to pull Ukrainian forces away from Donbas area allowing Russian to encircle and force a surrender. This is almost over, Russia having achieved capture of those two areas. However, should this drag on it is entirely possible the Ukraine will be faced with new Russian offensives to take land they don’t currently want.

No—in most cases David is crushed under Goliaths Iron Shod sandals. Finland lost to the Soviet Union—in the end. US Patriots would never have beaten England with out Franco-Spanish help. All of the 300 Spartans were killed, so too the men in the Alamo. If America hadn’t stepped in they would have had to make a deal with Hitler’s Germany. England didn’t help the Confederacy and she was crushed. Remember Biafra and the Civil War in Nigeria? Crushed. Most of the time the bad guys win. North Vietnam won in that war—The Taliban won in our most recent escapade.

Nowhere, not even once did Russia state a goal to seize all of Ukraine or even Kiev?

so Putin put together a giant 70,000 man invasion force, the largest army Europe has seen since WWII, to seize ... just a narrow 60-mile-wide border strip in SE Ukraine?

And Russia still can't even get full control over that?

C'mon man open your eyes ... they tried to grab the whole of Ukraine, they thought it would be a pushover

and they failed spectacularly

Open your eyes. 70k to take over something almost as big as Texas? Not even close to the size of a force intended to conquer Ukraine. But if it makes you feel better to think that....fine by me.

Geez it’s like most people don’t know what Putin’s real objectives were. Understand the Russian economy and you’ll know what the game is and why Russia has already won. Or just insult beach other over made-up BS.

LOL! The losers who said “Kiev was a feint” are now starting with the “Kherson was a feint” excuse for the impending retreat back to Crimea.

What if, just throwing it out there, what if the Ukraine campaign was mostly waged with old soviet artillery that doesn’t have a great deal of utility against a modern western military with air superiority, and fought with the lowest regarded conscript units and least reliable officers. What if the whole Russian campaign was a way of using up old low-value materiel against an outnumbered enemy to make some limited advances and hold relatively friendly territory that had already been softened and prepared for a half decade or more? Would it look any different than the results you’re seeing today?

What if this assessment, given by a pampered royal navy lawyer who somehow rose to the chief of the British military despite an unremarkable combat record and plenty of opportunity to bolster it in two decades of war, is based on the same assessments that led the combined forces of the western world and the “most powerful militaries in history” to spend twenty years fighting to an embarrassing stalemate against illiterate goathearders?

Russia has a stronger currency than when they started this campaign. Their national debt is, if Dr. Google is any judge, half of what America just passed away in arms shipments to Ukraine. Nearly everything Russia exports is at all time high prices and the world needs fertilizer, fuel, and grain more than ever. Germany and western Europe have been painting themselves into a corner by shuttering nuclear power and are more reliant than ever on Russian oil. Food crops for next year are already projected down because of fertilizer price hikes. By winter, there is a real threat of blackouts in Germany if something doesn’t free up some supply quick.

Russia’s military order of battle never relied on needing a strong NCO corps and good treatment of their troops... they have millions of conscripts to draw from as needed, territory which is far to vast to be effectively attacked and held by any opposing military, and most of their equipment is meant to be operated by drunks. Their officers corps, like every military, are probably overpopulated and filled with dead weight and given that their military doesn’t rely on small unit maneuver, not nearly as sensitive to some officer losses.

With that in mind: By what metric, pray tell, are the Russians losing, other than by counting flags on Twitter profiles?

It really brings to mind just how small people’s sense of military scale has become to think that a force of 70,000 is “giant”.

That’s a secondary objective IMO - primary was getting Ukraine to cede ethnically Russian Eastern Ukraine.

I think tertiary objective. Secondary objective is to keep NATO out of Ukraine.

Putin looks so sad and depressed in that photo. Better get your red magic marker ready to X out this POS. He will be dead or be a vegetable, lying on his permanent sick bed within a few months.

It doesn’t matter if Putin loses 25% of his power, or even 75% of his power, or even 99% of his power, if no one goes on the offensive against what he has remaining.

Not to mention that with oil prices at a high, he is making enough in oil sales to buy more than enough power to replace what he has spent.

The US is a more diminished power as well. We sent all of our stuff over to Ukraine. And look at all we left in Afghanistan.

you just learn who is going to put in a full day posting on this and skip over when you see their name.

There are folks profoundly invested in pushing a certain narrative.

I have never wanted an ignore button more on FR, not even in the height of the HG trollery years.
