In special election, GOP flips heavily Hispanic South Texas House seat: This qualifies as a political earthquake

This qualifies as a political earthquake.  In a special primary election to fill out the term of former rep. Filemon Vela, who resigned his House seat in March, GOP candidate Mayra Flores received 50.98% of the vote, making a runoff election unnecessary.  Rep.-elect Flores will represent the Texas 34 Congressional District that runs along the Gulf Coast to the Mexican border, and which is 84.54% Hispanic.

Source.

Hispanic voters are dumping the Democrats, a trend that has the potential to doom the party at a national level.

🚨BREAKING🚨

The first Mexican-born woman ever elected to Congress is REPUBLICAN @MayraFlores2022 who ran on a pro-borders, pro-patriotism, pro-God, and pro-family platform.

How's THAT for narrative-busting?

The Hispanic shift is real and we're just getting started. 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/XxkwFBF8ME — Giancarlo Sopo (@GiancarloSopo) June 15, 2022

This historic win will bring back God to the halls of Congress! This win is for the people who were ignored for so long! This is a message that the establishment will no longer be tolerated! We have officially started the red wave!! #TX34

Will district lines be different in the general in November?

Yes. The new district lines are still Hispanic, but much more Democratic and she will face a popular Democrat who currently represents another district. His home is now within this district. Very tough campaign for her in November.

yes you do and that makes it even worse for Texas Democrats. When a district that they put into their back pocket as a given folds like this, what district will be safe?

Only deep blue districts in the hearts of Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio.

Encouraging for sure but are there enough walk away Hispanics to counter the Librat Gringos who moved in from states they already ruined?

Too early to say. But I think recent developments will make Texas from solidly red to "lean" red much like Florida right now. Previously, it was going to be a purple state much like Georgia or North Carolina but Democrats really ****** it up with Hispanics. Hispanics all work in the service industry which was heavily impacted by COVID-19 shutdowns.

Yep. Populated by whites and blacks. Hispanics are off the gravy train now.

Uh, not at all.

Good grief!

Maybe it is possible for the proletariat to learn.

That word, Latinx, is probably the worst word the Democrats could have ever come up with. Every single Latino I know hates that word with a white hot flame.

None is the short answer. She doesn’t fit their narrative so there will be no coverage.

....She won only by 7.5, so how the new lines look will be very important.

Even though the red shift in the RGV was already happening in 2020 as reflected in Trump gains there (I believe that's why TX survived the cheating in 2020), Biden carried these same counties by 13 in that election. There's a tectonic shift underway down there.

A district right on the border went Republican? Yikes! Oh well, that just shows that Hispanics who are here legally understand the danger of The Big Guy's policies.

Boundaries will be different in November. This special election was to fill an unexpired term under the old boundaries. New boundaries are in effect Nov. and she will be running against an incumbent.

OK,I suppose that makes sense...replacing someone elected under the old boundaries elected by those same boundaries.

The new boundaries are nominally more D than the old ones but the good news is that Cameron County is in both the old and new and is the most populous county down there, She is the first Republican to carry that county in 150 years. Will be interesting to see what happens.
