WASHINGTON — Key senators announced a framework agreement on new gun legislation Sunday, marking a breakthrough on a collection of measures to combat gun violence, including “red flag” laws and enhanced background checks on buyers.
The chief negotiators of the deal are Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., an outspoken proponent of gun safety laws, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a firm Second Amendment advocate who has promised the new measures won’t impact the gun rights of law-abiding Americans. The final bill hasn’t been written yet, sources familiar with the negotiations said.
“Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country,” Murphy, Cornyn and other senators involved in the talks said in a joint statement. “Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.”
Unlike the Democratic-authored series of gun bills that passed the House last week, the Senate deal has a good chance of becoming law because it is expected to have support from key Republicans, who wield effective veto power over gun legislation in the Senate due to the 60-vote filibuster rule.
A centerpiece of the Senate deal is substantial resources for states to implement “red flag” laws, which allow individuals like police or family members to petition courts to keep firearms away from people deemed a risk to themselves or others.

Yeah the usual 10 sacks of crap went along with it
“Negotiated.” There will be absolutely nothing in this bill that benefits gun owners. These guys are great “negotiators.”
Do you really think yet another gun law is going to stop murder and mass shootings? Do you really think Red Flag laws are a good thing. You do realize that means taking away a person's rights when he has not been convicted of a crime and that is done without due process. You are either misinformed or total freedom hating POS.
Unless it includes increased funding for cops, armed guards in the schools, additional safety for kids and teachers, throwing INSANE and drug-addled young men into mental health centers the FIRST time a teacher or parent asks and no more of this ‘Gun Free Zone’ BS, I, for one, ain’t buying what they’re trying to sell me!
Don’t look for this to accomplish anything, whether passed and signed into law or not.
You can practically guarantee that the Democrats will lace this bill with poison before it comes to a vote. They do it every time.
Florida has a very strict red flag law.
I am sure Republicans asked for something in trade (like better border control or voter ID) ...(extreme sarcasm)
Red flag laws mean we lose our guns. Thank you GOP.
Taking our guns away is in there, with the “red flag” BS.
If you stop and think about it, it’s kind of crazy to suggest guns should be available with no regulation at all. That’s like saying a 13-year old kid should be able to walk into a gun store with cash and buy a fully-automatic rifle. I’m a strong Second Amendment supporter, but that’s nuts.
Just goes to show there is room for improvement in Florida. By the way Florida is full of Democrats and RINOs that believe depriving a person his constitutional and God given rights to defend himself without committing a crime or due process.
You fail at making an argument by repeating leftist red herrings. Now just give up. You are not changing my mind and I am not changing yours. You can go and register as a Democrat now.
UNCONSTITUTIONAL
That is totally untrue.
The First Amendment requires that the courts apply “strict scrutiny” to any infringements. It is not sufficient for a law to be “reasonable”.
Strict scrutiny requires the government to prove that there is a compelling reason to pass the law. There must be no alternative to passing the law which does not impact the First Amendment. The law in question must touch as lightly on First Amendment protections as possible.
The First Amendment is not subject to “reasonable regulation”.
We can hope to hear from the Supreme Court in a couple of weeks whether they will protect the Second Amendment as carefully as the First.
our little friend here Pated is a leftard tool for the DU. Time for the Zot with the mods.
Pated is anti Trump, anti Republican and anti conservative and a hidden tool and the fag spins that the audit didnt say that Biden lost. Couple of “red flags” dontcha say?
when I see some newbie in post threads that’s not a regular poster, time do some digging.
If there were zero Gun laws tomorrow, what would change in terms of shootings?
Serious question.
Criminals would still steal guns and obtain them from the trunks of cars.
And the insane would still Fina a way to get them as the Sandy Hook shooter did by shooting his mother.
So what else can be accomplished by letting the mentally ill live out their psychotic fantasies?
>> That’s like saying a 13-year old kid should be able to …
An absurd analogy

is deserved, but it is more fun destroying PaTed's senseless arguments. I believe in free speech as much as 2a rights. PaTed has every right here on Free Republic to expose himself as a total low-IQ moron.
Cornyn and the rest of Washington’s swishy RINO’s think they have conservatives firmly over a barrel. What they’ve done is to increase the time until we can replace them. As a conservative I’m going to vote for Cornyn’s Democrat opponent. I’d rather have the enemy in the enemy’s trench.
