January 6 House Committee repeats Trump ‘Stand by, Proud Boys’ myth
American Thinker ^ | June 12, 2022 | Jonathon Moseley

Posted on 06/12/2022 5:51:41 AM PDT by Moseley

On June 9, the “Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol” of the U.S. House of Representatives held a rare evening hearing. As predicted in the run up news leaks, the Committee repeated the myth that Donald Trump told Proud Boys to “stand by.” That is, Trump critics have claimed for years that Trump asked the Proud Boys to stand ready to pounce. Prosecutors in indictments and court motions and also the civil lawsuits repeat this same lie.

In reality, this comes from the September 29, 2020, presidential debate in Columbus, Ohio.Joe Biden – not Donald Trump -- mentioned the Proud Boys. The moderator of the debate, Chris Wallace, asked Trump:

CHRIS WALLACE: Are you willing tonight to condemn white supremacists and militia groups…”

DONALD TRUMP: “Sure…”

CHRIS WALLACE: “And to say that they need to stand down and not add to the violence in a number of these cities as we saw in Kenosha, and as we’ve seen in Portland”

DONALD TRUMP: “Sure, I'm willing to do that.”

CHRIS WALLACE: “Are you prepared specifically to do it?

DONALD TRUMP: “I would say almost everything I see is from the left wing not from the right wing.”

CHRIS WALLACE: “But what are you saying?”

DONALD TRUMP: “I'm willing to do anything. I want to see peace.”

CHRIS WALLACE: “Well, do it, sir.”

JOE BIDEN: “Say it. Do it. Say it.”

DONALD TRUMP: [pause, thinking] “What do you want to call them? Give me a name. Give me a name. Go ahead and who do you want me to condemn?”

CHRIS WALLACE: “White supremacists and right-wing militias”

JOE BIDEN: “Proud Boys”

DONALD TRUMP: “Proud Boys… Stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left because this is not a right-wing problem. This is a left-wing problem.”

Notice how Trump calls this a “problem.” Trump makes clear he is being asked to “condemn” someone. “Who do you want me to condemn?” Trump asks. Trump says, “I want to see peace.”

Thus, the oft-repeated allegation is knowingly false. There is no indication that Trump was ever thinking about the Proud Boys. When Joe Biden suggested that Donald Trump should condemn the Proud Boys and tell them to stand down, Donald Trump agreed… but only after Joe Biden chose the target.

In the video, Trump visibly hesitates before asking “What do you want to call them? Give me a name. …” indicating that he doesn’t know specifically who Chris Wallace is talking about.

The following day, Trump explained to the news media:

The MSM has the country brainwashed. Trump worked harder than any candidate in my memory. Biden didn’t even hold rallies. The country is suppose to hate Trump and forget
what damage Biden has done? Who elected the MSM to anything?

President Trump’s response was amazing considering the malicious trap little Chrissy Wallace was trying to spring on him. If he made one error, it was saying “stand by”, when obviously, he meant to say “stand down”.

But trying to make an issue out of one rare gaffe by President Trump is just silly, given Joe Biden’s deeply disturbing propensity for gaffe-making.

Trump doesn’t think well on his feet and as a result was one of our lest articulate presidents. Everyone knows what he meant about extremists - he is opposed to them. It just didn’t come out that way.

Wait, what? Is that like saying “Are you willing to condemn mayonnaise and all condiments?” How, exactly are they all one?

If you read the article Trump was not inarticulate and was absolutely clear.

I read Trump's words. He was clear as mud. He knew what he wanted to say and butchered it.

Agree. love him but he mush mouthed this whole thing and came across as defensive because he was rattled and for some reason thought the inquisitor’s pressure deserved a thoughtful answer. Optics poor. Easy to twist. Ronaldus Magnus would have said, “ Chris, I’ll play your game but on my terms. I unequivocally denounce all terror of every stripe by every side. Proud boys and Antifa. I also denounce your attempt to generate a sound bite to twist and misquote. Let’s ask ol’ Joe if he will denounce the violence by those criminals that rally around the political left. 10 billion dollars in arson and destruction in inner city neighborhoods spawned by demonstrators who weren’t wearing their approved COVID masks by the way. Dozens of police and fire fighters murdered , ambushed. How about it Joe? Will you denounce that?

Chris your biased agenda and grade school rhetorical tactics are embarrassing.

Sigh.

I think he probably meant “stand down” but got it wrong. He obviously didn’t want them attacking anyone..they weren’t going to attack anyway…and the words he says after this validate that interpretation.

The Dems are running on edited soundbites, so probably most people have never even heard the rest of it.

But it looks to me like these are going to be the words used as the pretext to change Trump.

You are kidding right? Joe Biden can't even put a sentence together, and Barack Obama was not very articulate unless he was reading from a teleprompter.

If you have the perception that President Trump was inarticulate that is because the media and the left endlessly lied about what he said and quoted him out of context.

Be that as it may, Trump is terrible at answering questions and off-the-cuff comments. I don't know if it's because his brain is working faster than his mouth is or what, but he has never come off articulate. His whole time in politics is littered with incidents like this one where what he clearly means is jumbled by what he says.

Exactly. Trump misleads and the media demand evaluations of his fitness to lead, the left mispeak, and the press covers it up.

“And finally, Bos, I just want to say thank you for Youkilis.” (after boston traded him to Chicago)

“Even though most people agree... I’m presenting a fair deal, the fact that they don’t take it means that I should somehow do a Jedi mind-meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right.” (mixing up star trek and star wars)

But, you know, part of the American way is, you know, you can just keep on making it if you’re providing a good product or providing good service. We don’t want people to stop, ah, fulfilling the core responsibilities of the financial system to help grow our economy.”

“One such translator was an American of Haitian descent, representative of the extraordinary work that our men and women in uniform do all around the world — Navy Corpse-Man Christian Brossard.” he pronounced the ps in “Corpsman”

“The Cambridge police acted stupidly.”

“The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings and inefficiencies to our health care system.” (At least he spoke the truth for once)

“It was also interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate. There’s a lot of — I don’t know what the term is in Austrian, wheeling and dealing.” (While speaking to Germans- Imagine if President Bush had said any of these things?)

“No, no. I have been practicing...I bowled a 129. It’s like — it was like Special Olympics, or something.”

“I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.” (Tipping his hand to Joe the plumber- Imagine the outrage by the press if President Bush said he was going to redistribute everyone’s hard earned money?)

“Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee — which is my committee — a bill to call for divestment from Iran as way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don’t obtain a nuclear weapon.” (A committee he is NOT on)

“Let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. It will be a strong friend of Israel’s under a McCain...administration. It will be a strong friend of Israel’s under an Obama administration. So that policy is not going to change.” (uh huh)

“I’ve now been in 57 states — I think one left to go.”

“It’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

“The point I was making was not that Grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn’t. But she is a typical white person, who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know, you know, there’s a reaction that’s been bred in our experiences that don’t go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way, and that’s just the nature of race in our society.”

“Come on! I just answered, like, eight questions.” (That’s fine Mr President, you can take the next 7 years off then- we don’t want to overwork you)

“In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” (12 people died)

Yup- and there’s plenty more folks- but you’d never know it because the media keeps it quiet- but if it had been President Bush saying any one of these things, he’d have been hounded for years)
