SHANGHAI (Reuters) -China's capital Beijing is facing an "explosive" COVID-19 outbreak connected to a bar, a government spokesman warned on Saturday, as the commercial hub of Shanghai began mass testing to contain a jump in cases tied to a popular beauty salon.
The warning followed a renewed tightening of COVID curbs in Beijing since Thursday, with at least two districts - including its most populous, Chaoyang - closing certain entertainment venues after a flare-up in a busy neighbourhood known for its nightlife, shopping and streets of embassies.
While China's infection rate is low by global standards, President Xi Jinping has doubled down on a zero-COVID policy that authorities say is needed to protect the elderly and the medical system, even as other countries try to live with the virus.
The latest cases in Beijing were linked to a drinking establishment known as Heaven Supermarket Bar. Infections have since surged, with Beijing saying on Saturday that all of the 61 new cases uncovered in the city on Friday had either visited the bar or had links to it.
So far a total of 115 cases and 6,158 close contacts linked to the bar have been reported, throwing the city of 22 million back into a state of anxiety.
Less than two weeks ago, Beijing had relaxed COVID curbs imposed to fight a major outbreak that began in April.
With the COVID resurgence, the sprawling Universal Beijing Resort - a theme park on the city's outskirts - late on Friday rescinded a plan to reopen, saying it would remain closed until further notice. Three of its workers had visited the Heaven Supermarket bar, according to Beijing authorities.

Why is Russia prioritizing civilian population centers over enemy troops? Why are civilians priority target? Why are cities being razed?
Why is the regime targeting Americans with money supply inflation at the same time its suppressing supply chains? Why was American energy production targeted? It is money supply inflation, not consumption inflation.
Civilians are the target in all of this. Poverty, dependence tyrannical control are the objectives. It's all about power and control over others.

The answer is simple, in war you identify the center of gravity and attack there. The intent is to have the population force the government to surrender. The center of gravity (CoG) is a concept developed by Carl Von Clausewitz, a Prussian military theorist, in his work On War. It’s current Military Doctrine

Keep the narrative going. Fear. Explosive. Surge. A "state of anxiety." And "major outbreak." So the press messaging is filled with that vocabulary intended to drive the panic.

The reason is to save face. When COVID first appeared, it was much more virulent and problematic. They thought they had an Ebola-type disease and they botched the initial response. So, they overreacted.
Because the party is always right, they cannot admit that they overreacted after under-reacting and must keep following the same policy to prove they were right.
It is as simple as that.
A violent internal CCP struggle appears to be underway between the Shanghai-based Jiang Zemin cabal of kleptocrats who want to return to the open economic policies of the 2000's and Xi's Tianjin/Beijing-based neo-Maoist reformers who are trying to end corruption but also re-impose ideological purity.
Looter fascists vs. hardcore Communists, in other words.
Xi is slowly losing the allegiance of many in the CCP hierarchy who want their cash flows restored to the levels they enjoyed prior to his tenure as General Secretary - thus we see Xi taking these seemingly irrational actions to punish his rivals in advance of this Fall's party Congress, when he could very well be removed.
China's lockdowns are certainly hurting the US economy and world trade, but I don't think that is the primary reason they are being imposed.
