Tiger Woods rejected almost $1bn to join rebel Saudi golf league, reveals Greg Norman

Greg Norman has revealed that Tiger Woods has turned down a figure just short of $1 billion to join his Saudi-backed golf tour.

One of the most divisive episodes in the history of the sport took a dramatic turn on Monday when it was confirmed that Phil Mickleson had signed up to be the poster boy of Norman's revolution. The six-time major champion will now play in the tour's inaugural event at The Centurion Club at St Albans this week.

It will be his first event since announcing an indefinite break from the sport in January, following comments where he described the state of Saudi Arabia as 'scary motherf*****s'. That was despite initially accusing the PGA Tour of 'obnoxious greed'.

As a result, he missed the US Masters and last month's US PGA, despite being defending champion. And now, the American accepting a deal to join the rebel circuit represents a seismic capture for Norman.

However, the Australian has admitted he failed in a bid to attract the most marketable golfer in the history of the sport. The career of Woods, 46, appeared in jeopardy following his high-speed car crash in February, but he remarkably returned to play at Augusta in April.

And his global appeal was still evident, with his comeback signified by a mass frenzy of interest and support. He further defied doubters by entering the second major of the year at Southern Hills, but was in clear physical difficulty and withdrew after three rounds.

Hard to imagine a PGA tour pro wanting to playing golf in a country that does not allow drinking.

I take it back... two events are on his courses and he’s a major backer.

TV? What is this, 1974? All of the tournaments will be streaming on facebook, youtube, or the LIV tours own network.

In Saudi Arabia the whole course is sand. You want to stay out of the grass traps.

Here's an overhead view of the Qatar International Golf Club:

Woods will make $5 billion staying on the PGA Tour and collecting endorsements the rest of his life.

Bingo. His playing days are effectively over IMO, but there is a lot of money behind the scenes we don't know about.

They are playing at two Trump courses in America, I think they still have their liquor licenses, they haven't taken them away from Trump, yet.

glad Tiger said no

One billion is one billion. He may not need the money though. But I assume his endorsements is not what it used to be because his brand name is tarnished.

I always hate that argument that “all money is equal”

If Nazi Germany had survived WWII and now had billions to spend to rehabilitate their public image by starting a new sports league, would you sign up?

hey “a billion is a billion”, right?

who cares where the money comes from, right?

Don't American baseball players sign up to Japan leagues?

“They are scary motherfuckers to get involved with,” Mickelson said of Saudi Arabia. “We know they killed [Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates. They’ve been able to get by with manipulative, coercive, strong-arm tactics because we, the players, had no recourse.”

Mickelson got in hot water for the above quote. But I think he became a pariah more for defying the PGA than insulting the Saudis.
