'Biggest Ripoff': Fed Up Mass. Gas Station Owner Stops Selling Fuel
NBC Boston ^ | 6-8-22 | NBC Boston

Posted on 06/09/2022 4:33:20 AM PDT by raccoonradio

Massachusetts gas station owner fed up with what he considers attempts by oil companies to fleece customers with outrageously high prices at the pump has stopped selling gas as a protest.

Reynold Gladu, who has run Ren’s Mobil Service in downtown Amherst for nearly 50 years, drained his tanks earlier this month and has no current plans to refill them.

“I don’t want to be part of it anymore,” Gladu told The Daily Hampshire Gazette for a story published Tuesday. “This is the biggest ripoff that ever has happened to people in my lifetime.”

Gasoline in Massachusetts is averaging more than $5 per gallon, according to AAA New England. The business will continue to do oil changes and other repairs, but Gladu acknowledges it is unlikely he will be able to remain open for long without selling gas.

“Dealing with Mobil, they don’t think through their pricing policies anymore,” Gladu said. “I’ve served their product, but I refuse to do it anymore, because they’re only getting richer.”

Julie King, a spokesperson for ExxonMobil Corp., wrote in an email to the newspaper that the price at the pump is out of her company’s control and is based on several factors, including the price of crude.

In related news, local burger joint stops selling burgers to protest the rising cost of beef. They will continue to offer fries and shakes.

He’s stumbled across a great business idea!

Now, if he can just get his hands on some cheaper gasoline, he’ll own the marketplace.

Pre-tax gas is sold at about the same price world wide, about 45 to 48 cents a litre. Anything above that is taxes.
It is not the oil companies that are ripping people off.

Maybe the Dems paid him to buttress their meme that the oil companies are ripping us off. Sounds like another Dem astroturfed stunt.

Ya have to be deeply brain washed to blame gas prices on oil companies, especially if run a gas station. Stopping sales is a pointless an futile gesture.

“Dealing with Mobil, they don’t think through their pricing policies anymore,”

Another genius who never grasped the concept of supply and demand. If he's that upset then why doesn't he just go ahead sell his gas to his customers for less than the cost that his Mobil vendor charged to supply him? Derp.

“The business will continue to do oil changes and other repairs, but Gladu acknowledges it is unlikely he will be able to remain open for long without selling gas.”

Here in NJ a couple of gas station owners say they make very little with gasoline; the advantage to selling it is that it brings in customers for repairs. The model works less as cars become more advanced; more and more mechanics are unable to do very specialized work on cars, especially with the computers - which are tied to more and more functions.

The issue for station owners isn’t what they charge versus what they paid for the gas in the underground tanks; it is WHAT THEY WILL PAY TO REPLACE IT.

When Trump was president, the oil companies were not “greedy” — heck, they were practically giving the gas away.

Now Biden is in the White House, and these mean ol’ corporations have decided to get all greedy and “fleece” their customers.

Weird, huh?

He might consider the fact that under Trump gas was 1/2 the cost because he make it possible for oil companies to increase production. Does this idiot not understand that prices increase when availability of needed commodities decline. Has he not listened to Biden explain the necessity of economic pain, the destruction required before Build Back Better becomes possible?
