Just to give some perspective this topic is an example of why I am no longer a ‘Thin Blue Line’ supporter:

https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/4069322/posts

“The brave Uvalde mom who rescued her two sons from Robb Elementary School during the devastating shooting that killed 19 students and 2 adults is speaking up about being threatened by law enforcement. Angeli Rose Gomez told CBS News that she was informed that if she continues to talk to media about her fearless actions, she would be charged with a probation violation for obstruction of justice.”

It’s tyrannical retaliation, pure and simple. This is an example of why a growing number of people are starting to see cops as the enemy of freedom and liberty.

The fault lies ENTIRELY with the drowned man in this case. Sometimes stupidity is fatal.

Unless one of the cops was a fit lifeguard then I can understand their reluctance. This is very different than standing around and letting a shooter massacre children.

I respect his courageous humanity, and I would like to think there is still more of that than less of it left in our national character.

And I definitely do not in any way criticize him for doing what he did.

Did my post indicate I might have felt otherwise?

Agree.

Back in the 70’s, I was a local Texas police officer.

Went to a shooting in a run-down dangerous bar and found the victim laying on the ground, face up, gurgling, a bullet wound that entered his right eye.

Blood everywhere.

Looking at the scene, chaos everywhere, people yelling and screaming. I was watching this mess when some filthy drunk biker guy yells into my face, “Do something, do something, you’re the police.” I looked at the guy on the ground again, looked at the filthy dirty cowardly biker and told him; “Yup, I am the police. I ain’t no doctor. If you want to do something, I’ll tell you how to administer first aid.”

I wasn’t going to turn my back on that crowd, and I wasn’t going to put my lips to the stinky biker and begin CPR. Yuck. He died before the ambulance arrived.

Exactly. Some posters here expect the officer to learn extensive water rescue skills because the perp refused to learn how to swim and he then put his own life in danger.

A hispanic man was shooting a bunch of hispanic kids and was stopped when a white guy showed up.

I may be wrong but wasn’t the victim a Texas National Guardsman?

How many jobs do you expect a cop to do?

These days? Apparently not many.

I agree. I had the Boy Scouts lifesaving merit badge and Red Cross Lifeguard certification more than 50 years ago, and there’s no way I would try a swimming rescue of an adult now unless I had something floatable that he could get his hands on before he got them on me. Even then, I knew the risks of a swimming rescue, but today we probably both would die.

I think I’d try to rescue a child, though.

This useless POS homeless guy KILLED HIMSELF!

NO WAY should officers have gone in after him. So the crazy homeless guy could drown the cops?

Was that his intention all along? To lure a cop into the water so he wouldn’t go out alone?

1. The cops didn’t know that he would go into the water.

2. He then immediately proceeded to swim way out, only to realize that he wasn’t a good swimmer (used to the shallow end).

3. Then, glub, glub, glub, he went under never to resurface.

4. There was no time to get any flotation devices even if the had any nearby.

Yes. But you can bet the family will be suing LE because of it. The USSC has already said they are under no obligation to protect you. The only ‘obligation’ they might have is if the State of Arizona has a “Good Samaritan” law that requires reasonable action.

Mr. Bickens was not trying to disobey the police. Once he got in the lake he was bound to obey the sign that said “No Swimming”. He finally did something right and look what it got him.

Unverified Report:

The Hohokam people used to make human sacrifices in the very spot where Tempe town lake is now located. It is believed by many including city officials that for a person to take the swim if death or nadir de muerte is disrespectful to the dead and can cause spiritual turmoil, infertility, or even death.

Ah, thanks. Sometimes when typing in haste, the tenor of a post may get missed over the specific wording, just wanted to be sure.
